How to ship my 4X4 SUV to Managua from SFSubmitted by ima1961 on 23 June, 2006 - 21:27.
Hello, does anyone know the best and the most economical way to ship a 4 X 4 SUV to Managua from San Francisco? I heard some terrible stories about how bureaucratic and corrupted it is at the Aduanas. If you are a foreigner, how can you do that without paying a lot of duties/tax and how much time is needed to retrieve your car from the custom people? Can anyone enlighten me or guide me to the right place to do this? Shirley ( categories: )

Shipping Your Vehicle
First of all, Shirley, what kind of vehicle is it. Unless it's a Toyota or Nissan or one of the other common vehicles there, it willb e a pain to service. Also, how old is it. They won't let a vehicle more than 7 years (I think that's the correct #) old into the country. Do you have retirement status? If you do, you are allowed to bring in a vehicle duty-free up to $10,000 in value.
I did ship my Toyota SUV in a container that had my household goods in it as well. To show the value of the car, I had a doctored Bill of Sale and/or Title -- I can't remember exactly. I had my retirement status, and there was really no problem at all. The only hold-up was because I had unthinkingly put my battery charger and fire extinguisher in the car, and they were not included in the car's Bill of Lading. So, if you have anything at all in the car, it MUST be included on the Bill of Lading. Everything must be very, very precise because customs is always looking for stuff.
I am in the Bay Area, and if you want the name of the shipping agent I used and whom I recommend, let me know. Sherry
don't bother . . . buy mine instead !!

Sell it
Not the answer you want to hear I susepct but the best way to avoid the costs and the hassles and the customs and the corruption, is to sell the vehicle (SF is not that close notr economical as a transit point) in the U.S. and replace it once in Nicaragua. The only sure way to avoid paying most /all, duties / tax on the importation of the vehicle is to smuggle it in or seriously bribe someone.
Carina & Other Reasons
Carina is correct. I've been here 15 years and I agree.
Any type of vehicle that anyone could want is available in MGA.
The cost of the shipping is just not necessary.
The big problem is that the most vehicles that are sold in Nica are not the standard USA (America) variety and you can find no repair parts for your California vehicle.

Harley
How about a Harley? Are motorcycles looked at differently as far as bringing them in goes? Is there enough decent road to ride one? I've all but decided to sell it before making the move but thought these questions might make up my mind for me.
Thanks!
Partial answer
No comment on the aduana situation v.v Harleys....
However, there are PLENTY of decent roads to ride. This is Nicaragua, NOT that horrid "paradise" of CR where the roads eat Harley's... !!!
