San Jorge

San Jorge is a small town just east of Rivas. It is actually located on Lake Nicaragua and the almost constant breeze off the lake keeps the area cooler than other places at the same altitude.

While I haven't spend a lot of time there, I have been there enough to see how different it is from where you find all the Gringos. Most Gringos know the town of Rivas exists because that is the closest fair-sized city to San Juan del Sur. But few head to San Jorge unless they happen to want to take the ferry to Ometepe Island.

Thus, you will find typical small-town businesses in Rivas but also a huge beach on a gigantic lake. On that beach you will find Nicaraguans, Nicaraguans and Nicaraguans. While all the Gringos are heading to SJdS or other places on the Pacific Ocean, Nicaraguans from Managua head in droves to the beach in San Jorge.

I have walked the beach, talked to locals and just hung out and never felt "out of place" other than to realize there just wasn't anyone else with, as Ana likes to say, "un culo rojo" there. Even if you are just in Rivas to catch a bus to SJdS, San Jorge can be an inexpensive sidetrip to see something very different from Gringolandia.

Mixed Thoughts

Having spent a little time on several visits staying in and getting to know San Jorge better..I am of mixed mind about it as a place to live (as opposed to a place to stay)

On a positive note ..Yes it is not Gringolandia and it is close enough to public transportation to make it a viable, mello, inexpensive place to stay for those who wish to use it as a base for daytime adventures in the south. Yes it is less expensive than Rivas/SJDS but close enough to both and as these areas become more dear..budget oriented people will look here

As a place to live I would have to keep in mind the reality of overall poverty of the area (and all this can and has..bring) and the fact that the beach area needs some clean up (how to be polite?)and the "distressed look" can be depressing with time

..good future potential and it will attract people..

Great to stay there .. I always use 'Las Hammacas" in SJ as my base camp in the south

As a place to live..?..Mixed bag

Phil, my Spanish is minimal butt,

I can only infer from "un culo rojo" that you were sunbathing in the nude....and thus infer that there are nude beaches in San Jorge. Sounds like a nice place with or without the "culo rojo" though.

Can you help me on this?

Thanks,

Tom

Nope

It is just an Anaism--one of many--for a Gringo. I tried to tell her I was white. She says red. Price you pay for a opinionated Nicaraguan wife. Of course, I tell her she is dirty because her skin isn't white and other bad things. So, again, I think we keep it pretty even.

Maybe Marty has an opinion on that. He has seen us in action.

(Disclaimer: Ana will always win but it will be a fight!!!)
