Business directory and other ideas?

A new version of Drupal (4.5) is on the horizon and using some built-in tools I am going to add a business directory here. This is likely 1-2 months away--first waiting for the final release of Drupal, testing it and then writing the directory stuff. This will be a lot less sophisticated than my initial plan but it will work and should give us a good idea how useful the whole concept is.

As I look at these specific changes, are there other things people would like to see? On item already on the list is a way to see all the members which I plan to implement at the same time.

programmers/techies in Nica

Hi,

I too am looking for programmers in Nic (php preferrably) as I have a small but successful web development firm in Vancouver, Canada, but we are looking to relocate our offices to Nicaragua for a few months of the year.

We have other business ventures in Nic as well, however, we would like to carry on the web development to maintain cash flow.

I am sure that the tech industry is pretty nascent here, so I am also considering ways to contribute to its growth.

Thanks.

I can help out

Not only does me an my partner do simple web pages for ourselves but occasionally for others on contract. I do know a few contacts at the university of good trained people, they come cheap too. Be glad to help out.

Programers in Nica????

Dear Sherif6:

Our organization is physically based in Central America, would be more than happy to assist you in the near future. I just returned from Masaya and Managua where I often work in the development of receptive tourism with local artesans and hotel owners. Our Director, formerly a resident of Bolivia, is now based physically in Central America. Our website is www.thepolyglots.com/ with homepages along with full details in both English and Spanish. Please study carefully before you reply. Our director,Prof. U. Paz, fluent in Spanish, is seeking strategic alliances in Nicaragua, especially in the technical areas you have mentioned and he will be there in Managua-Granada-Masaya next month in November of this year, along with our Secretary, who is a native Nicaraguan. If you are unable to be there perhaps a meeting with your wife and your Granada Rep. would be fine. One project we have in mind (view text below) is translation of software, whereby skilled natives could make as much as 6 times the minimum wage: "FREE SOFTWARE LOCALIZATION! If you are a software developer, programmer or customer, join The Polyglots and get your software localized into as many languages as you need for FREE! We will also help you promote and sell your software in different languages! Software Localization: send us your software details..." Of course, these free services are for members only and membership worldwide is $99USD for Five (5) Years duration. No $999.00 "Seminars".

Back on topic

Just like Canadian Health Care, the Nicaragua directory listings will be open to anyone with a business in Nicaragua. The goal is to get the information available for people reading the site and restricting the content defeats that purpose.

So, any registered user can add a business or add a comment to an existing business listing. The only practical restriction is that off-topic garbage ("get rich quick" and such) will be dumped by us where us is those with editor permissions on the site.

When I initially designed a more comprehensive plan for PlazaCr I was going to allow searches in separate languages meaning that there would be different fields for each language. On a practical point of view, a good taxonomy and a free-form description field allowing the business owner to enter information in any and all languages he is comfortable with seems sufficient.

What I am looking for is feedback on this concept. Thanks.

Huh?

You have replied many times to my posts with links to your web site. But, almost always, the links just don't work. In this case, most are the file is NUL characters which just display as some ASCII characters with NULs between them in every web browser I have tried.

I appreciate the fact that you are apparently doing something but you really need to "get your act together" if you expect people to be able to use these resources.

Me Too

Dear calanguagetours:

I have also given up on trying to view any of your pages. In fact, I don't even read any of your posts anymore since if you can't even get a web site to work what could you offer me with more demanding requests.

I agree with fyl, if you want to have a site that works in one browser only then fine, detect the browser and tell the rest of us not to waste our time.

Reply to your comment.....

Dear Whoever,

I really appreciate your criticism. Our site is seen well on Explorer. Are you using explorer 5 and up?

People with Mozila or Netscape may experience problems. The reason is mainly due to the fact we use Unicode since we need to use on the same page several languages and scripts.

Now, a little advice. It seems you feel you know everything and your advice sounds haughty and patronizing. I do appreciate any criticism, but have you checked your computers first?

Tell me if we are wrong.

We know that about 10% of Internet users have difficulties in viewing our site. In how many strange scripts do you have your site? Is it in Arabic or Russian or Hebrew?

Also please, whenever you reply, use a name we can connect to.

Thanks and all the best,

U. Paz Director The Polyglots www.thepolyglots.com

Grumpy reply

I don't quite know everything but, yeah, I probably come close when it comes to how the Internet works. As this is about the 4th time I have pointed out problems like this, including sending direct e-mail as Donald ask, and I never get a reply, yeah, I am a bit grumpy. First off, feel free to mail me at fyl@a42.com.

Now, assuming you mean Microsoft Internet Explorer, no, I don't use it. It isn't a choice on my systems the same as when I pointed out in the past that while you claim your on-line classes are PDFs that they are actually some Windoze executable--another thing that is useless for the non-Wondoze user.

Armed with your new information about Unicode encoding I got some pages to display in Konqueror and part of others in Firefox. It appears that some of the pages are in UTF-16 but not all. And auto-detection is not working which I assume means the headers are incorrect.

If you want to run a site that only works with one browser, fine. That is your choice. But, I suggest you detect what browser is being used and tell the rest of us to go away. I don't want to trivialize the issues of supporting multiple browsers. We have put a lot of effort into getting around browser bugs (mostly incomplete support of CSS 2 in Internet Explorer) in order to make out new magazine site work in at least popular browsers.

As for browser counts, we see abut 40% Internet Explorer, 35% Mozilla/Firefox and the rest spread amongst Konqueror versions and quite a few others.

looks like Chinese in Mozilla n/t

OK Will send on to the Director..

Will copy and paste and send your critique onto the Director, who is the technical person...Thank You.
