What would you do with this?Submitted by gypsytoes on 2 April, 2006 - 09:15.
![]() I was walking along the beach on Ometepe with my neighbor who is 12 years old. She excitedly pointed out, "Mira, Debbie, una tortuga." Sitting upside down at the water's edge was a complete burial urn. I had it dated to be between 800AD-1200AD. Since I can't remove it from the country(and wouldn't want to remove it), I'm thinking of starting a little museum with some of the pieces I have found and teaching a class on the preservation of antiqities in Nicaragua. My only problem is finding a very knowledgable archeologist who has some experience with the history and artifacts of Ometepe. I've been to all of the local museums and am extremely fascinated with the Pre-Columbian pottery and preservation of the Nicaraguan artifacts. ( categories: )

Burial urn
There is a small museum at Charco Verde on Ometepe which has a large quantity of these in many sizes. Perhaps they would appreciate a donation. We visited there last June and enjoyed the hike back to the lagoon area. Finca Magdalena is not to be missed either. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Only back for a short visit
Unfortunately, I was only back on Ometepe this time for a short two week visit. I delivered some school supplies and other things to my 'adopted' families on the island. My favorite taxi driver in Rivas took us on a property tour and we found a fantastic house for sale in San Jorge. Who knows? I am not ashamed to say, I love Nicaragua! My antiquities are safely stored at a friend's house while we continue to debate about moving back! I am now an online professor for a large University and I have the capability of teaching online from Nicaragua and receiving US dollars. San Jorge has broadband internet. It's close to Ometepe. I can make a good living teaching online. What's stopping me? My son has one more year of college! After that...we'll be headed back "HOME" for good.
Have you been
to the Palacio Nacional. They have a museum there and many pieces which have been cataloged and preserved. I suppose they have some professionals doing this work. There might be a larger benefit to the country if it could be a part that collection. Just a thought.

The museum idea certainly sounds so great.
I know that Rivas has the small museum. Does Ometepe have any now?
Debbie - Are you back living in Ometepe now? I hope so. I know you help.

There is a small museum on Ometepe. I was there last month.
Exactly MDog
There is a very nice small and interesting museum in Alta Gracia just across from the church. The logical and ethical home for this piece of antiquity.
