Global warming
Believe it or not unless some miracle happens or the earth has a mechanism for balancing.... Once the northern passage opens the transportation of goods across the world will be much differnt than today. Alot of the canal traffic goes through because its the shortest way 10 months of the year. When you can traval across the artic ocean say in November why go through the canal it's way south. This will lessen the amount of shipping through the canal. Basically a new freeway but much much shorter.

I was able to look at some documents in 1994 I think. The study concentrated on price crossing Panama versus price crossing Nicaragua, I am not sure, but I think there was a price difference of 60% benefitting Nicaragua. The other aspect was time, it takes a long time for a Panmax ship to cross the Panama canal, sometimes you have to wait in line either at Bilbao or Christobal, its very costly. I also remmember that they where planning a high speed container train that would cross Nicaragua in 3 hours or less, not sure,it was many years ago I was looking at this study and the blueprint.

This thing will never be built and if it is the people who build it will become bankrupt. Two reasons i say this first a source, National Geographic episode on global warming and its efects on the north sea. In ten years to twenty years the north sea will no longer ice up leaving shipping lanes from Europe to Northamerica or Asia open almost year long. No more will ships have to travel around the world to deliver goods, the great northern passage is reality. Canada is building a huge rail facility at the Hudson Bay in expectation of this, the russians are developing all their Northern Ports in expectations. This will eliminate the need for such a frieght rail. Second it doesn't make sense container ships fit in the canal, only the big Tankers cant fit. A oil and gas pipe line across nicaragua to unload a super tanker in the gulf and reload a tanker in the pacific is a project the oil companies are looking at and have been for years. Oil and gas journal, hydro carbons magazine etc. Its been on the table since Carter ceaded the canal. Alot cheaper than rail too. This also directly relieves a short coming of the Panama Canal. Two buoys and a pipe line a few pumps maybe a storage tank or two and walla Nicaragua is in the center of the oil Business. Good or bad? I'm not the judge i just hope some of the wealth rubs off on the little people.
and I just hope...
that the pipeline doesn't spring leaks as the Alaska pipeline always does.
Also, to me it seems the same devastating effects to the environment will result whether it is a rail that is built or a canal.
