BankaccountSubmitted by weimar on 25 February, 2006 - 18:23.
I want to stay in Nicaragua for a year (Gap Year). I need a bank account at a nicaraguan bank. Does anybody know how much the dues are on Transfers? Any other informations about this topic would be very nice (e.g. which nicaraguan bank has good conditions...) ( categories: )

Never transfered money from a US account to Nicaragua. However I did go to Banpro for $2500 cash, it cost me a bank charge of about $70.
Kind of high!
Question
Has anyone ever just used a ATM card to get money? This is for long term living in Nicaragua, not vacationers. Are you charged high fees? Now I do not like bank of America but I think they have one in Managua. Can you just use it like you were in the states on an extended trip?
When we travel to Nicaragua we take cash or send it to ourselves via Western Union but that is expensive. When we go to Mexico we use ATM and my credit union does not charge any fees
debit
In the past year I've used my debit/atm card from a small bank in Arizona in Mexico. CR, and Nic. It carries a Visa logo on front and Cirrus/interlink/Star markings on back. No longer carry an American Express card when traveling because too many places don't accept it.
Travelers checks used to be the preferred way to go but it is less desireable now. In Esteli a local bank took about 20 minutes to very courtiously cash a travelers check and charge me a 5% service fee. The same bank had an atm in an AC'd room with an outside entrance with an armed guard who opened the door for me. Wham, bam, I was out with my money within a couple minutes. If there was a service charge it was very minor. Most atm's have Eng/Span. instructions and your choice of US or local currency.
Next trip, I'll carry some small US bills, some 20's, my atm card, my Visa credit card, and some $100 travelers checks for deep emergencies (or deep opportunities!).
One surprising thing, and a little scary, is that all these atm's tell me my bank balance back home. The litle electrons follow you wherever you go!
Anybody know what the dollar limits or daily limits are on Nic. atm's?
cash limits
Limits are supposed to be set by your bank. That said, with the same card I get a $400 limit at BAC (the one you were talking about and my least favorite for 20 reasons), 2000 cordobas at BanPro and 6000 cordobas at Bancentro (which also gives you French as a language choice). Haven't tried it in BDF.
Fees are in the $1-$3 range depending on the bank, phase of the moon, ... I can certainly live on 6000 cordobas a month so I am a happy camper.

can't click
Can't get on that link Pete. Can one open an account without being a resident at Banpro. Any tricks?
"KJ" - Clicking
♠ Miskito Alan:
If you run into a "no click" situation again, try this method and this method did work with "Pete's" link.
Simply copy the link and paste to your browser and click.

I will stay a year in Estelí and need a basic ATM card with good conditions. Which Bank in Nicaragua could you recommend to open a bankaccount?
