who knows how to get a cat from Nicaragua to USA or Europe?

Submitted by keepgoing on 11 February, 2006 - 06:06.

My daughter who is living in Estli, adopted a cat. Now she plans to take the cat with her back to Europe but there are tremendous difficulties. It seems she will have no luck with it. She visited a Vet and she called her airline but nobody is really sure what she has to do. The cat has all shots. Her flight is with Bristisch Airways from Managua to Miami from Miami to London and from London to Berlin. Because England is very strict with animals she planned to that I take the cat in Miami and send it with cargo direkt to Berlin. I would like to help her but its really not easy. You might think, let the cat in Nicaragua but she explained that a cat in Nica is not like a cat in Europe. They do not treat the cats like she thinks it should be treated. Does anybody know something about an animal which was brought outside Nicaragua? The offficials want her to get blood from the cat and send it to the US because they do not trust the Vets in Nicaragua! Also she will need a transport box she does not know where in Esteli she can get it. Whoever can help please let me know.

No BA in MGA

Since BA doesn't serve the MGA-MIA market, my best guess it is code-share with AA for the MGA-MIA segment. From the AA website:

  • Temperature Restrictions have been established to ensure animals are not exposed to extreme heat or cold in the animal holding areas, terminal facilities, when moving the animals between terminal and aircraft or on an aircraft awaiting departure.
  • Heat Restriction: Pets can not be accepted when the current or forecasted temperature is above 85 degrees Fahrenheit at any location on the itinerary (75 degrees for snub-nosed dogs and snub-nosed cats).
  • Cold Restriction: Pets can not be accepted when the ground temperature is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit at any location on the itinerary unless the pet has a veterinarian's statement of low temperature acclimation (see below). When temperatures fall below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, pets may not be checked even with a statement of low temperature acclimation.

Looks like kitty is gonna stay in Nica but YMMV...

Um, well, ...

With the U.S. part involved I doubt it will work no matter what you do. The U.S. airlines all have maximum temperature regulations for having animals on board. I forget the number but Miami is likely to be "too hot" in the timeframe you are talking about.

Also, as people "just passing thru" Miami airport are not getting fingerprinted and such, I am guessing the default assumption is that the cat is also either a terrorist or a bomb and you just will not be able to get it thru the airport without a disaster.

I would seriously suggest she do some "cat ownership shopping" here. There are a reasonable number of Europeans here that might fit her criteria and and be interested in a cat. That sounds better to me than a rather unsure transport future for the animal.

Cat is now in the US

Hi, I just red your last answer and your suggestion to a "cat ownership shopping". Well I want to tell you everything worked out very well. My daughter arrrived 3 weeks ago in Miami airport with the cat. She had all the neccessary papers but nobody was interested. She had to go to the Immigration anyway before she continued her flight. So we had 4 hours together. We took the cat to our home and next week she will bekome an American cat because of the Vet. The cat will have the next flight in May to Germany! She likes it here, specially the A/C. Greetings
