No SpanishSubmitted by El Quijote on 24 January, 2006 - 07:46.
Wondering if anyone has Spanish for Dummies or any other suggestion. Perhaps someone has a Berlits(sp?) course on CD that they are not using anymore. Maybe a suggestion as to a good program. Appreciate the help. ( categories: )

Highly recommend
I've tried a couple audio courses, and by far the best was called Learn Spanish Like Crazy. 32 complete lessons which you can either get on CD or, for about 1/3 the price, download to an mp3. Here's their link: http://www.e-learn-spanish-online-cd-fast.com/offer.html The website is a bit over the top, but it really is a great course. There's also a new kid in town which sounds pretty good too, for beginners, called Rocket Spanish. Here's their link: http://www.rocketspanish.com/premium/
Best option is to find a local actual live class to attend a couple times a week, and supplement w/ one of these--especially good if you spend time driving or jogging or something where you can wear a headset and don't mind repeating sometimes absurd phrases in Spanish outloud.
Good luck!
Marry a nice Latina that does not speak English
That's what I did. My Spanish is still not very good but her English is Muy Bueno. At least it's been fun trying to learn.
Spanish
Come to the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, buy the Spanish version of the Miami Herald, sit in the park beside any old Cuban and go at it. You'll be U.N. certified within a week.
strange but could it be?
I have this funny feeling that you guys are all writing to me in Spanish and I can understand all of it! You're the best!
p.s. got a bid in on ebay and planning to buy the book.
Spanish Made Simple by Broadway Books
I've had success with this book first published in 1955 and updated a couple of times since. ISBN 0-7679-1541-0. It's about $11 on Amazon.

One book I found amazingly helpful is "Madrigal's Magic Guide to Spanish". It is 50 years old and while there are reprints I think it is out of print. Powell's probably has used copies.
Beyond that, check out http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/spanish/lj/index.shtml for some on-line learning.
Courses such as Berlitz teach what they are designed to teach--what you need to survive as a traveler. But, they don't really teach you what you need to know long-term.
Beyond that, yeah, just find some people and talk to them. :-)
Powells
Thanks fyl, going on the Powell's website now.

I have several books and programs laying around, including Spanish for Dummies Intermediate. started to use them years back, just couldn't seem to get into it though.
Besides living in an environment where I automatically learn, I think what helped me out the most was this Franklin Spanish English Translator. type in a word in English or Spanish and it will pronounce the word and if you want to conjugate verbs and adjectives it will show you all forms past and present tense.
The other great thing about this device was that it will say the English words and phrases. So the spanish speakers that are interested in learning English can get involved with your education as well. http://www.franklin.com/estore/dictionary/BES-1850/
that model is a little pricey, however they sell another which is about half the price, however I only know this one.
Thanks for the lead...
on the Franklin. I just bought a used one on ebay for $30. Can't wait to get it. Tom
Looks good
Thanks for the info. I went to the site and it looks pretty cool. Thanks again.
.
My family is coming down to visit in August, they dont speak any Spanish. They have basically Hijacked my Franklin!
hijack
I think I'm going to see if it's on ebay since I have nobody from which to hijack this little thing. Thanks again
evil Mall-Wart
This one's more affordable but doesn't have the speech. I have trouble pronouncing English so I might need Josh's. Thanks for taking the time to answer. I went to fyl's website and the speaking is too fast still for me. I think I'll stick to nouns and just use a bunch of them in a row. Ugly American thing to do. Thanks again
.
I am almost positive there is one for about $40-$60 new. it is minus a few features. Theres a ton of stuff on that translator that I dont seem to use. They sell these cards that clip into the back, you can buy a bunch of different books to read on it and theres an address book. These and a few other I dont use
better
Much better idea than me trying to remember my freakin ebay password. Thank you again.
