Nica beer and FDC outside Nicaragua
I have seen Toña in Publix supermarkets in Miami in my last visit over two years ago. Don´t mistake the colors, in the US the box and bottles are predominantly yellow and white in the brownish bottle.
FDC is now available here in Chile in the supermarket chain Jumbo. They sell Centenario, Oro, Gran Reserva and Black Label. I think the Centenario goes for around 24 dollars a bottle but I prefer to have people bring it to me from Nicaragua for much less.
2 Cases - "FDC" - Zero U$
♥ Miskito Alan:
I will bring you 2 cases of "Centenario" for nothing - no U$.
Please, just send my airfare (round-trip) from MGA to Chile and pay my Chilean expenses and I will even help you drink the rum.
Please advise me by "private mail" on "NicaLiving" because I don't want "John" & "Pete" trying to come with me to deliver your "FDC".
Just keep the porch-light on!

hotels in Nicaragua
As far as hotels in Nicaragua go..Which will be be an accomodating hotel to stay in while visiting Nicaragua and where is it located?
I am looking forward to returning to Nicaragua since I LEFT IN 1979 when I was 6 now I'm 33 year's old... what do you advise?
That's funny
If I asked "what is an "accomodating" hotel in the US, what would you suggest?
My friend likes El Alpino in Esteli but I am sure Alan has a favorite in Port. Um, it's a pretty big place down here. Plus you might want do define the price range--I know decent places for $5/night here but some people want hot water and are willing to pay $10, for example.
Best Beer
The best beer I've come across there is Premium. I guess it's sort of like a Central American type Budweiser, but they're great. Budweiser's horrible by the way. Premium rules!
Bud recently came out with
Bud recently came out with their budlight lime has anyone tried this garbage it has so much lime in it you cant taste anything else. As a member of a few beer clubs this gets an F...Premium A+
beer
I sorta agree with you there. and I 'm not a beer drinker! FLOR DE CAÑA IS THE BEST THOUGH!!!!
favorite nica adult beverage
refrescos naturales is the best adult beverage in nica! also good for ninos too
TOÑA IS COMING!
I voted for FDC mainly because I can not get Tona in California then I received this today!
Thank you very much for your inquiry into our product, TOÑA® CERVEZA. We are currently expanding our coverage in the US on a region-by-region rollout. Right now you can find TOÑA® CERVEZA in Washington State, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Florida. By the end of 2006 we expect to be in California. Best Regards, Marcela Vargas Export Manager Compañia Cervecera de Nicaragua
Montana?
Never would have guessed there was clients base big enough to merit Tona distributions in Idaho and Montana. Seems more unbelievable than believable but Vargas should know. I wonder what a 6-pack sells for in Boise or Mossoula? Hard to believe people pay $7-9 for Tona (which is what many other Latin beers cost when you buy 6 in the U.S.).
@ Micro Brew Prices
It was a while back but when I did see Tona in Florida and it was at one of those chain "Beers of the World" or "World Beer Tour" sorts of stores. It was (well?) over $1 per bottle, in a 6-pack. The thing about these kinds of stores is that they usually cannot guarantee fresh products. So, the thought of buying a Tona which made a very slow trip in a very hot ship, and then sat around in a store in Miami for 6 or more months, is not all that enticing, especially when you consider that a fresh ice-cold Tona is not exactly something to brag about. The money is to be made off exiles, longing for a "taste of home". This more than any other thing is what creates the need/market, not the quality of the beer.
Better question
I think a better poll would be, Which bar will you get the coldest frostiest beer in the country?
Coldest beer in Managua
Hippo´s by far!
or
Theres this one bar I go to during Santo Domingo, its next to the Old'n day Entrance to Managua, on the Santo Domingo Parade route. I dont think the bar has a name, however this has been the coldest beer I have EVER had. It was a Frozen slushy beer, Nothing like a brain freezer.
Easy Answer

How is Toña?
I tried Victoria and FDC while I was there about a week ago. FDC is pretty good, and I don't normally like rum. Vicoria tasted rather watery to me though. Is Toña or Bufalo any different? I was in Colombia earlier in 2005 and all their beer was really weak too. Is there such thing as a stout beer south of the U.S. border?
Different?
People like and look for differenet things in beer(s). That said, Nicaragua has long been known as a country with shitty beer - and I am being more generous than many reviewers. It is not necessarily my claim (though I believe it), but something one could confirm via any/many world-beer-tour sort of journalism article in the last 30 years. Tona and Victoria are not that different. Cold enough (damn cold) they are acceptable in the hot climate. Beyond or outside that, they are a lame substitute for real beer. Many Latin national beers are weak(er) and similar. Early German and Bavarian immigrants to such places made similar brews, which while they might have been impressive 100 years ago, seem less so today. Buffalo at least tastes like BEER. This is litle if any Stout beer in the Latin world; same with other variants. Honduras has the best beers and best taste variety in Central America (though Costa Rica makes more brands), even though they lack a light and NA brew. If you want real GOOD beer, try to find a micro brewery. A guy on the bay islands in Honduras makes some, and a guy on Yojoa Lake, though neither is yet ready for export. The same is true in Panama City and Guate City. There is also a guy in Managua. The problem with most micro brews is that a bottling line is $$$, so it is only sold on site, in the "pub" making it.
Gaseosa.
Gaseosa.
when you say Gaseosa
are you refering to the Nicaraguan brand Kola Shaler in Cola and Ginger ale flavors?
GASEOSA!
Any kinda pop! cocacola, pepsi, 7-up Fanta naranja? etc...
Soda Pop
Gaseosa is any kind of Pop.
One for three
I do think you got the idea of beverage.
Oh, my fault. I just
Oh, my fault. I just figured, since I'm an adult and I am Nicaraguan . . .
yeah
I thought we were refering to Nicaraguan branded.
Speaking of which I enjoy the taste of the Shaler gaseosas, however when I go to buy a bottle everyone thinks Im sick. after about an hour at my house neighbors start bringing over herbal medicines and soups.
.
I just want to say that Bufalo is disgusting.
and a little side note about the Brahva, which is not Nicaraguan. Just curious how true this is. I have heard that Brahva better known as Brahma in Brazil, had a name change when coming to Central America. Brahma or Brama in pronunciation is the Rutting of Deer. So the 'M' was changed to a 'V'. Making it now known as Brahva in Central America.
Miranda says that is true Josh . . .
but I still maintain that I like Bufalo more than Ton~a or Victoria . . .
Doors of hope fly open when doors of promise shut. -Thomas D'Arcy McGee
Maybe not?
I am not sure what the real reason is for the spelling change, but doubt it is due to some language / pronunciation difference. I say this because Brahma (original spelling) was and still is successfully produced in Chile and other Spanish-speaking South American countries, for decade after decade after decade. My guess is that the beer is successful in terms of sales because in many locals it costs the same or less than bottled water - and speaking of water, a less than ice-cold bottle of water is better than a less than ice-cold bottle of this v#$%^ !
