Wistiting (Coati)

This is our coati named "Wisti". She enjoys going to the creek to look for worms and termite nests while Kuka is washing clothes.

Awesome

Excelent pictures of the atlantic coast...I've trying to get a hold of pictures of the atlantic coast of Nicaragua but it is difficult. Do you have any pictures of Bosawas rainforest.

I also have a question if anyone living in the "atlantic coast" can answer. Are there are project to train miskito indians on ecotourism? I think that would greatly benefit their communities and there would be lots of interest in visiting prinzapolka and other nearby regions.

If not I'm gonna have to the "coast" on my next visit.

Ecotourism, BOSAWAS

I travelled through BOSAWAS from Wiwili to Waspam several years ago. We made the trip over a five day period in an old, tiny, and overloaded fiberglass runabout with 40HP outboard. We started the trip only a few days after a tropical storm had dumped near floodlevel rains into the watershed. So, the river was really "honkin'". Our panguero ran all eleven major rapids with all of us and our gear onboard! It was quite a thrill!

Unfortunately, we hit a rock on one of the first rapids, broke the propeller in two, and plunged into a whirlpool. No one was injured. We carried a spare prop. And, while the boat popped out of the whirlpool half filled with water, we didn't lose any gear. However, my camera got soaked and it quit working for the remainder of the trip.

Not very much has been done to date in the mosquitia to prepare for tourism. AMICA and a few other organizations have made some efforts. But, we've got a long ways to go!

The terrain in Prinzapolka differs greatly from that of BOSAWAS. BOSAWAS is predominantly upland tropical rainforest and highland streams and rivers. BOSAWAS has many Mayagna communities. Prinzapolka is predominantly Miskito. Prinzapolka has lowland tropical rainforest, pine savannas, immense swampy grasslands, mangroves, inland freshwater and brackish water lagoons, and beaches. Both areas are quite isolated.

Love Bite

Yep, that's her love bite. I got several nasty infections from her over the years that we had her because she got over affectionate!
