Bringing laptop?

Submitted by casper on 29 December, 2005 - 16:23.

So how silly is it to bring along a laptop and hope to find wifi connections? I realize there are plenty of cheap internet cafes from my last visit. But I was hoping to use my Googletalk connection to call home and other software (photo downloads etc.) in a less public situation. Any thoughts - going to be mostly in SJDS/Rivas area in February. Thanks for any help.

Wireless Card?

Does the Managua area offer anything like my Sprint Wireless Connection Card where I can connect to the internet with my laptop around here (USA) practically anywhere? So I wouldn't have to rely on a hotel providing a connection or wireless access? I know my card won't work there, already asked Sprint. I was wondering if any of the internet provider or cell phone provider companies offered this in Managua yet. Thanks!

The two cell phone providers

The two cell phone providers, Movistar and Claro offer that service. Here are the links(in Spanish):

Claro-Conexion Movil

Movistar Interactivo-Navegacion

In either case you would have to purchase the card.

there are a few hotspots in managua . . .

Plaza Familiar, Carretera Masaya, Zona Hippos, Galerías Santo Domingo y Siman. Hotels Intercontinental in Metro Centro and the Crowne Plaza . . . for sure nothing in Rivas, don't know about San Juan del Sur.

There are supposed to be some coming on line on Ometepe Island per this story -- http://www.elnuevodiario.com.ni/2005/12/22/informatica/6704

I bring mine

I dont count on having a wifi connection. Some Cyber Cafe's will let you plug your laptop in and charge you for the time, its cheap. Sometimes you can find an open connection. Your Googletalk, more then likely will be more agrivation then the 2 Cordobas a minute cyber cafe's charge, if you were thinking googletalk over a wifi connection you might find, forget about it, the latency is already too long.

I like having mine as another place to off load my pictures, burn a CD, this way if any of the flash memory gets lost, the camera gets stolen, I still have my pictures. If they both get stolen, well then it just wasnt my day... ((Grin)). Just dont let your laptop take over your life.

This advice and 5 cordobas will get you a taxi, to anywhere the downtown area of of Esteli...

buen viaje

Leave the laptop at home and make it just a vacation.
