Looking for information on satellite interne users in Granada...

Does anyone have information about satellite based internet services available in Granada. I know there are several sat services that are available south of Mexico, but I don't know how far they stretch down.

???

Why would you want VSAT in Granada? Good (not great) internet access via cable and wireless.

luck?

I wondered if you have had any luck with your connection? I am looking at doing the turbonet service and paying $600 for the radio connect. I have no access to phone line, would like to do sat. but don't want to spend $1500.

Better than VSAT

The turn-around delay on VSAT makes anything that doesn't have to go an extra 45,000 miles a win. Unless the particular access location to TurboNet is saturated, it works fine.

Sat Service

To expand on FYL's point, anything that is time sensitive doesn't work well with geostationary satellite services, such as direct PC. The reason is that traveling at around the speed of light, it takes the signal more the 600ms or a little more then a half of a second. Voice over IP services start taking on the characteristics of a conversation with a walki-talki when delays (latency) go beyond 250ms. Direct PC also suffers from the same problems of direct TV, dropouts and signal loss during bad weather. Why explain all of this? With all of this said, satellite service is a good choice, especially in rural areas. It will not fill the needs of someone looking for real time communications such as gaming or live voice and video feeds.

satellite internet

I just ordered the BGAN Nera WorldPro 1000 satellite modem. Costly at $2175.00 and $109 per month for 20mb a month, but I saw no other solution in my area between casares and La Boquita. I ordered it from Tempest telecom, and am awaiting its arrival to me here in the states before I move to my new house June 1st.

Direcway Satellite

$500.00/ $59.00 month, uses SATMEX 5 speeds comparable to DSL.

satellite

Thanks, Jose. Do you have contact information for Direcway?

satellite internet problems

Just curious, but did you see if the satellite you will be working with has a footprint over northwestern Nicaragua? In other words, is there coverage? Additionally, and more importantly, legally, you must have a transmitter license here in Nicaragua. I have heard (anecdotaly) of customs confiscating satellite radio transmitting equipment if you can't produce your license. There are satellite companies here in Nicaragua that you can use that have coverage and are legal.

BGAN Coverage

Complete coverage is scheduled to come online for most of North and South America in June 2006. Nicaragua is well within the footprint. The unit is a small pad, doesn't look like a dish. I hardly think there will any risk in using this service since the recv/trans is not mounted outside and doesn't look like a dish.

BGAN satellite

The modem weighs less than 2 lbs. and connects to your computer. it has a built in antenna. You just point the modem to the South. Considering the small size and portability, I will be bringing it as carry on luggage, and who would know the difference as far as needing a monitoring license? Their sattelite for Central America just launched this month and as I am told is fully functional. this system is the system used by the US military and reporters as well in remote areas of Afghanistan and Iraq from what I have read.

Regional Versions

You should look into their regional service, I think its RBGAN, might be more cost effective for you, not sure.

Remote Areas

Well, considering the larger cities are still at the fringe of rolling out things like DSL ... your options are DirectPC, Dialup and smoke signals....
