La Gran Via Restaurante Chino

Submitted by fyl on 17 July, 2007 - 11:33.

While this is billed as a Chinese Restaurant it also has a menu section called La Trattoria with a bunch of pasta dishes and it offers hamburgers. It is just south of the "bank corner" (four of the five banks in Estelí are on the same corner) in the center of town.

It is very up-scale for Estelí with prices that certainly don't work for the average Nicaraguan. I felt it was a good data point for all the reasons that make it non-typical. This is a fairly "Gringo-friendly" place. The owner seems to speak an assortment of languages and the waiters at least deal with Spanglish. While http://www.NicaPlaza.com will become "the place" for business listings, this listing is here to give you an idea of what is in Estelí rather than being a restaurant review.

This is a sampling from the menu with translations in [ ] when I felt them necessary. Let me know if you are still confused by anything. Note that they do have take-out, delivery (Servicio a Domicilio) and take credit cards (Tarjeta de Crédito). Note that the exchange rate is about C$18.3 to the US $. (Prices are from 2005. Expect about a 25% increase by now.)

In Puerto Cabezas, Jose who is a native of Port operates the "Restaurante Dragon Chino" and recently opened a 2nd location in Managua about 2 blocks from the rotunda at "Bello Horizonte". Jose is a great Chinese chef and is mostly Chinese with a little thrown in from the woodpile. Good Food.

Won Ton Fritos (5) C$35 Same as Port

Cerdo o Pillo Agridulce [sweet and sour] C$80 Jose cooks "Camerones Agridulce" which I love.

Res o Pollo c/Brócoli y Chanpiñones [mushrooms] C$100 I thought mushrooms were hongos and "Chanpinones" was the brand.

Brocolí en Salso de Ostión [oyster] o al Ajo C$50 I love brocoli with anything (unlike George Bush I)

Refrescos y Bebidas Gaseosas [pop] C$8 Naturales [blended fruit, water, ice, sugar] C$12 Café Percolado C$5 Café Expresso C$8 What the Hell -- No Beer or Rum? ____________________________________________________________________

Beer and Rum

Why waste space listing beer and rum. You can get that at the telephone company, post office or anywhere else. Of course they have them.

Champiñones are for people who can spell words longer than hongos. Ok, I think hongos is more typical for generic fungus but ...

Question

You replied to everything but my brocoli comment??? _____________________________________________________________________

WHAT IS

what is "cerdo" mean?

My Work Is Cut-Out For Me.

George: When you come, you have got to pay me more beer. I see a hard road up ahead.

Beer = "Victoria" or "Tona" Cerveza; Rum = Ron; Pork = Cerdo; Beef = Carne except in "Miskito" is still "beef"; Taxi = Taxi; Cigarettes = Marlboro, Delta, Windsor; Chicken = Pollo; and I will go into some other things with you via private email when Jan is not reading. ____________________________________________________________________
