Ceramics and other Nica Art
Submitted by kjl on Thu, 2005/11/17 - 18:03.
We are looking for information on different areas of Nicaragua that have distinctive art - like the pottery in San Juan de Oriente. We have heard of some areas by/near Esteli but would like to get as much info as possible. Part of what we are doing is looking for products that our son can sell in his store in Seattle, WA.
We are currently living in Managua in the C/Sur area. Any information is greatly appreaciated.
Thanks

Pottery
I think in Catarina there is a potter that makes these plates that are very nice. I was also in the house of an attorney named Camilo Bermudez in Granada that had a plate on the wall that was very large and beautiful done by an artist named Perez. I am sure if you contacted him he could supply you with info. He also speaks English. His e mail is camilo@lawyer.com. I tried to post a picture of the plates in Catarina but couldn't. If you want to locate the artist contact a friend of mine who located the artist for me. He is Geral and his e mail is gowey_2@yahoo.com. But the plate that Bermudez hand was absolutely gorgeous.

Marmolina
In the town of San Juan de Limay, about two hours west of Estelí, the local craft is soapstone (marmolina) carving. The product from Limay can be found in craft & tourist markets all over Nicaragua and Central America, like the big one in Masaya. The rock is quarried in the mountains around Limay and Estelí and varies in color from pure white to all kinds of mixed colors, similar to marble. There are dozens of carvers in town and the real adventure is walking around and identifying the homes of the artisans by the little piles of rock chips that have been swept out the front door - no other signage exists. It's way cheaper and more interesting to buy direct from the artisans than in the markets and prices are very negociable. Look for the classic "Gordita," a seated or reclining fat woman which I think must have had some fertility connotations. Also carved are animals and some abstract forms and the size can vary from finger size to life size or larger. Check out the carved altar in the main church (not for sale). Two busses a day to Limay from the north teminal in Estelí or 4WD west via the very bad dirt road off the PanAm north of Estelí. Note that soapstone is very fragile and great care must be used in shipping.
Catarina
I saw locals making bamboo baskets, plus lots and lots of plant items and some art up in Catarina, on the west rim of Lago Apoyo.
