Jinotega
The department of Jinotega is located in north central Nicaragua with much of its northern border adjoining Honduras.The second largest department, it is a little smaller than 10,000 square kilometers in area and has a total population of about 260,000. Municipalities include Jinotega, Cua-Bocay, La Concordia, San Rafael del Norte, San Sebastian de Yali, Santa Maria de Pantasma and Wiwili.
Much of Jinotega contains rainforest which is protected by its inaccessability. There are five natural reserves in the department (Cerro Datanli-El Diablo, Cerro Kilambe, Fila Cerro Frio La Cumplida, Macizo de Penas Blancas, Volcan Yali) as well as eight private reserves (Dinamarca, El Escambray, El Jaguar, Finca La Italia, Las Cumbres, Las Mercedes, La Palmera, Terebinto).
