Bill Blum on the NED

Bill Blum offers up a monthly missive under the title The Anti-Empire Report. While much of this month's report is about Ukraine, there is a part which seems important to Nicaragua. It is about the National Endowment for Democracy or NED.

Blum talks a bit about its creation under the Regan Administration and how it is billed as an NGO but is anything but. As there are quite a few NED projects in Nicaragua, a better understanding is in your interest. Note that like Blum's book, the report tends to be pretty heavy on references.

The idea was that the NED would do somewhat overtly what the CIA had been doing covertly for decades, and thus, hopefully, eliminate the stigma associated with CIA covert activities. Allen Weinstein, who helped draft the legislation establishing NED, declared in 1991: “A lot of what we do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA.”
