My last post made me think: Throughout Latin America, and in all my Spanish experience, "saludos" has been the standard for informal salutation. Yet, in Nicaragua, everyone seems to use "saludes" instead. A search of the term on this site brings up a number of examples. Anyone know the origin of this variation, and whether it is unique to Nicaragua? I've been curious...

Everyone I know writes saludos, not saludes.

Saludos is a noun and Saludes is a verb.


"Saludos!" - Greetings.

Saludes - "I hope you greet everyone"

Nicas tend to be lazy in language (go figure!) and pass mistakes down the generations.

Like this comment from a NIca;... "Here we usually use "saludos", few people uses "saludes" and both are equivalent. However, I'd recommend you to use "saludos" because it is the dominant one, therefore it sounds better and more adquate in a conversation"...

All this talk has me thinking of salads and of how poor & insubstantial they tend to be here. That shouldn't be! Every manner of herb, salad & vegetable greens can grow here. Step up from 'gallo pinto' and what you commonly find is a fried meat + rice + potatoes + a garnish. The two transparent slices of cuke laid on lettuce beside equally thin sheet of beet for color ain't enough to choke a chicken, let alone constitute a 'salad'. Or that platter may come with cole slaw made with enough mayo to actually choke a chicken.

Salud, Nicas! Estornudaban o no. Set aside your sugar & alcohol addictions, you can't live on 'rojita' and 'guaro', even with daily portions of 'gallo pinto'. Grow & eat more greens! Saludos!

It All Starts

with those damn Roma tomatoes. .. Thick skins, picked green, ..

How about some Best Boy, or cherry tomatoes? Cherry tomatoes would grow like weeds here.

I talked to a tomato grower about this once, he claimed that there would be no market for a tomato here besides the romas.

Beets here don't have the rich flavor of those I'm used to in the US . .. carrots are OK, and I'm getting used to them in my salads.

We all piss and moan about the Nicas not growing vegetables in backyard gardens, but how many of us garden?

I've heard the opposite about beets here vs. the US

Guy told me he never liked beets before he came to Nicaragua. It probably depends -- people who buy from Pali or another supermarket will get the stale vegetables. I never buy any vegetables from supermarkets.

I don't piss and moan about Nicaraguans not growing vegetables in their back yards because what they do grow tends to be fruit trees.

People grow market crops on the edge of town and further out.

Fruit trees are less labor intensive -- takes one hoe and machete guy to weed it once a year or so.

The things that look like romas are not actually romas, but creoles. People do grow the other kinds and even bring them buy to sell at the door often enough.

beefsteak tomatoes and cherry tomatoes organicly. nicas love them but the problem is price point. they would rather buy 5 roma tomatoe than 2-3 beefsteak. i also grow baby lett and kale near mga and u got others in the rivas area. ofcourse we mainly sell to higher end restraunts and resorts. but the products are out there. the avg field grown tomatoes are sprayed 15 times with highly potent pesticides.

Just ate a huge Greek salad ...

... at Bar Baro (Que barbaro!) here in Leon, jodido. The deep bowl was ringed/lined with Romaine lettuce. A kid with his little brother stood outside looking at me. After realizing I wasn't going to stop my lunch to give him a coin, he asked me, "Are you eating leaves?" Yup. "Do you like them?" Yup.

Unless you count cabbage, which doesn't look like leaves by the time it gets to them to eat, they've probably only seen leaves used for wrapping 'nacatamales', 'cuajada', 'elote' or cooking 'guerila'. I've yet to see any Nica eat spinach, kale, collard greens, okra, &c. Where are you, Popeye?
