News Cooperation in Central America
Historically, the news sources in Central America tend to be country specific. For some news that makes sense but there are also many things that fit into the category of regional information. A couple of recent topics that come to mind are the Mexican Fake Journalists and border conflicts between Nicaragua and its neighbors. Certainly the coup in Honduras was also a multi-country issue.
Carlos Fernando Chamorro, director of Nicaragua's Confidencial, is working toward changing that. This is discussed in an intereview with him by Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas.
The news websites El Faro de El Salvador, Plaza Pública de Guatemala and Confidencial de Nicaragua are working on creating a consortium of Central American digital media outlets to cover the region. The group would seek to add other news organizations in Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama as well.
