Ocotal, Dipilto
Went to Nueva Segovia Thursday for a quick trip. Took the ordinario from the Somoto Cotran. Nice ride, lots of greenery this time of year, ended up at the bus station on the south end of town. It was still early in the morning and cool so I walked up the road towards town. About 6 or 8 blocks up I noticed the famous statue of Saint Somebody off to the right and walked up to the statue. Kinda sad to see Los Angeles gang grafitti on a statue than is of importance to the locals.
Walked east a few blocks more through the business district till I saw some bank signs off to the left and used the ATM on the north side of Bancentro. 6000 cord limit, which is more than my home bank allows. Withdrew petty cash, went inside to change a 500 cord note to 50s. Wow! They gots AC, and I mean AC that you can actually feel! Quite a shock after a month incountry.
Went to the park. Pretty nice and many of the plants are labeled with name, botanical name, and use. Seems a former mayor was an ameteur botanist who put in the extra work. Across the street is the Casa de Cultural. Around the corner is a display of historical stuff about Sandino{s battles. Worth a quick look, but unfortunately most of the photos are seriously faded.
General impression is that Ocotal is a busy commercial town, like a smaller, poorer version of Esteli, minus the eye-candy, too.
As I rode the bus out of town toward Dipilto, I could see the large areas of poorer neighborhoods that strech for quite a while. Simpler housing on ungraded roads and trails. Must be a real hell-hole in the rains.
Gotta go, the sketters are biting my ankles. More later. .

Gee, i get to reply to myself!
While in the Casa Cultura I noticed a display about putting a park/tourist center by the river. I Walked the 2 blocks east of the park to check it out. Nothing yet and the river is in a deep ravine, but there is potential for a nice view if they build it right. Also checked out La Yunta, a few blocks sw of the park. Nice restaurant with tropical plants in the center, along with a little stage area so I bet there´s some music at night. Upscale menu, meat and booze heavy, with dinners from 110 cords and up.
Went on to Dipilto, cute town just below the highway. You´re in Pine country up here, with a bonus of a cute park also right on the highway. Surprized to see what looked like dwarf arborvitae bushes in the tropics, but it is pleasantly cool up here. Or, as my friends in Esteli say, "helado". Seems like the biggest building in town is the FSLN campaign headquarters, with the liberal party headquarters just across the street. Walked down to the right and a paved road took me to a concrete bridge over a stream. Nice place for a little break. On the way back, noticed one of the little Pulps had sitdown eating. Not much in the town. Later I was told that up a dirt road is also a Dipilto Viejo, which is a coffee growing area.
Good news, I have some socks on and the Skeeters are starving tonite. .
