Spreader bars, only way to go.

We've been offered many nice hammocks as we came through Guatemala, but none with spreader bars.

I have never been able to

I have never been able to get too comfortable in a hammock. I made a lounge swing instead. This swing is adjustable (six positions, but I only find three comfortable). Except for the fabric, all materials are local (may try hammock type stringing also). Also, the swing can face either way. In normal use mine faces away from my RV. When we want to watch a movie it can face the other way by merely moving the top bar to the other side (takes about one second).

the cloth hammocks are more zancudo resistant than the string ones. In terms of comfort, the finer and softer the weave the more comfortable a hammock is. Either way, I think I would have to be real tired to sleep in one. They are nice lounge-around toys.
