Iran-Contra equivalent for Ecuador?
Allegations that the US government has been investing in government change in Ecuador are not new. While Rafael Correa is extremely popular in Ecuador and all but a sure thing to win reelection later this month, the US government is not in his fan club. Recently, it was disclosed that Chile was involved in this campaign.
An interview with Patricio Mery, a Chilean journalist, fills us in on the evolving story. While some of the information presented needs verification from additional sources, there is a lot to learn.
Mery claims the CIA is running an Iran-Contra style drug operation in Chile, trafficking “about 200 kilos of cocaine per month” from Bolivia in order to fund anti-Correa operations. Early last year, Italian police discovered 40 kilos of cocaine in Ecuador’s diplomatic mail. Mery alleges senior Chilean officials were involved, and he has a dossier of proof for the Ecuadorian government.
