Very Shocking

Read this in LaPrensa yesterday while at work. The differences in our prison system are so vast as to be unfathomable. It's a hard problem for a government that has so many things that need fixing, hospitals or money to criminals?

Yep, hard reality.

Do you make the environment better, the same or worse than where they came from?

If you give them a room for four, 3 squares a day and 8 hours work then they are living better than the average victim.

Very hard to find a balance.

Very hard to find a balance. In many cases in Canada some inmates are definitely living better. I have noted a few things in my 15 years as a carcelero, push a con too hard and they will eventually explode either on themselves or you, they will for the most part eventually get out and return to a community somewhere (that's why I live way out in the country lol) , some ppl are just born evil and they will continue to do evil but for the most part these are the exception. Some people can actually be turned around, but quite often these ppl will turn their lives around no matter what the obstacles. So really what I am saying is that my experience is as clear as mud and there really is no "right answer" but I have learned the hard way that rehabilitation has to be part of any correctional plan, its like triage it's a policy that does the most for the majority of offenders and at the very least rehabilitation programs keep inmates busy, inmates who aren't occupied cause trouble. Last little pearl of wisdom on corrections, as it featured prominently in the article, is that if you want to combat corruption, be it in the police, millitary, or government in general, you need to pay a good wage! Decent retirement, benefits and salary are a must, they don't have to be making a fortune but it has to be enough that the risk of losing your job isn't worth it. It's a filthy job with little or no satisfaction but if the pay is steady, at a decent level and can finance what you want out of life it can be a good career.
