Matagalpa is in the mountains in North-Central Nicaragua. Most of the department and most of the population is east of the Pan American highway, the city of Matagalpa being the biggest population center in the north. If you are heading north on the PanAm, take to right fork in Sebaco to head into the heart of Magatagalpa and to continue up into Jinotega.

Matagalpa City -- Underrated
Having spent several days in Matagalpa, I have to say this is the most underrated city in the north.
Because of the lower elevation, I assumed it would be too hot. However, based on everything I have read, heard, and experienced, it is a bit cooler than Esteli.
I love all the greenery around the city, and the way the city sprawls up and over various rolling hills within the valley makes it quite scenic, both from above, and from within.
It is large enough to have a lot of "city" conveniences, but does not feel too large or crowded.
The roads north (to Jinotega) and southwest (to Sebaco/Managua) are now excellent.
We skipped it on our first trip to the north, in favor of Esteli and Jinotega. While each of those cities have their numerous advantages, Matagalpa has now become my favorite.
i live i n managua..but,
if i would ever move to another city in nica..it would be metagalpa..i agree with u 100%

"Adios" means have a nice day! .
How long is an average car
How long is an average car trip from Esteli to Matagalpa?
About an hour
44km from Estelí to Sebaco and maybe 25km from Sebaco to Matagalpa.
The road is severely potholed,
so it will slow you down some. Really be careful if it is raining, but other than that it is a straight shot.
