was watching alexis's funeral pass by, one of the nicas near me commented that there was probably 100 fsln flags for every nica flag.our 4th of july (for the gringos here)most americans i know wave the stars and stripes. are most nicas ashamed to wave there own flag?

I don't wave our flag
not out of shame but I think is more of an interpretation of how to show love and pride for our country. I don't recall while at school ever being told to wave our flag at any event but to display it during the Fiestas Patrias/Independence Day on our homes. Through the years the different political parties would give their respective colors to anybody that participated and it use to be only 2 parties : the liberals,Somoza's party and their color was red; the conservatives, the perennial opposition and their color was green. With our people everything can easily become politicized so the overwhelming presence of the Sandinista red/black comes as no surprise and also Alexis was a sandinista as well. I am almost sure that our current flag was not an unifying and rallying symbol. I would also dare say that the sandinista movement places more emphasis on the love of the party first and the love of nation second as I witnessed during my last 6 months of school in Nicaragua after the sandinistas took over I was a high school senior and they introduced a new undertone in all the curriculum. So you can imagine what a number they did on all the kids that were of grade school age. I am proud to be a Nica and was taught to love and show respect for our national symbols and is kind of funny how the flags of El Salvador,Honduras and Nicaragua are so similar on their color scheme but yet I feel that our flag is beautiful and unique . So to you Americans I say fly your colors as you deemed right from a pole a t-shirt or the antennae on your car to celebrate this Fourth of July but I'm sure your flag waves forever as much as does mine in each respective Heart. HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!!
Party 2008 Election Stuff
When the MRS and PC got removed from the legitimate party list, the MRS started a sorta "them or the rest of us" effort. Their idea was that anyone who was not FSLN should fly the Nicragua flag. So, instead of having MRS flags, PLC flags, ... you would have what appeared to be a united "not FSLN" presence.
One of the results was that if you were aligned with the FSLN then you could not fly the Nicaragua flag or it would be taken as anti-FSLN.
nica flags
i thihk its anti nica.as a usa citizen no matter your party affiliations dem.,rep.,soc.,lib.,you fly the american flag becuse you are an american.not a party member
Cultural Difference
I think what you are observing is a cultural difference. From my experience, people in Latin America seem to be more serious about politics. I don't mean just "I vote" but they actually participate in actions. Some are affiliated with a party, others are not. But, the people are actually out there.
When I lived in Costa Rica, the most common flags to see were those of the various futbol teams. Before and after games you would see the streets jammed with cars and people waving them. I actually found it amusing when I moved from an area where most of the flags were for La Liga, the team from Alajuela, to Sandinistaland because the flags of both are red and black.
Another read on this is the age of the revolution. Here, for good or bad, the revolution is associated with a political party. Many that participated in that revolution are still alive. Maybe, in 200 more years, things will have changed.
just a thought but
the US flag was the flag of the revolution, as the red and black were in Nicaragua. The difference is not really so great. Most Sandinista's I'd hazard to guess would say 79 was the rebirth of the country
If the rebirth of the country was in '79
when was the death of it? Same old story , same ending only the actors change. They all become what they say they despise . Nevertheless : Que linda, linda es Nicaragua, bendita de mi corazon. If there's a Heaven and by their cunning, schemming and lying all politicians manage to get in I rather go to Hell.
thats a shame
im on my 3rd residence card so i have been here for awhile.what i see at the political rallies is fsln flags everywhere kids who have been given a free bus ride,a tee shirt or hat and a tomato sandwich..one ?? i have is who gives them the bazookas they shoot off in the air,the police or do they make them thereselfe .i personally think a country should wave its countries flag.
