municipal water system in Ometepe

My wife and I are in the process of buying a small piece of land and intend to build a small rancho on it. Any ideas on how much it will cost to hook into the municipal water system especially over toward San Ramon. Any other information you might have would be helpful.

Adjunto los resultados de la traducción de las pruebas de agua que se realizaron en nuestra comunidad hace un par de semanas. Los ideal seria que todas las comunidades y hoteles de la Isla realicen este tipo de pruebas para poder garantizar la salud de la comunidad y los turistas que nos visitan. Cada prueba cuesta menos de $25.00 dolares y los kits para hacer este tipo de procedimientos se pueden comprar en los Estados Unidos. Adjunto el sitio web de la empresa Micrology labs.

The area on Ometepe that the poster refers to is the most remote on the island. For business of farming or cattle you will have shrinkage unless you take proper precautions.
In and around the larger towns on the island as a gringo/gringa you do the same as you would in any Nicaragua town-get to know your neighbors so they will watch out for you. I bring gifts whenever I return.

Hi Mark, We are new to the idea of posting and getting info from Nicaliving, I hope that the settings are right now . Yes I know that San Ramon is of one of the more remote parts of the island. It's not really that far though with a motorcycle.We alsolike the idea of being"out there" as we have lived in some big cities. Right now, for instance, we live in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, a huge congested dry city in the middle of the desert. You spoke of shrinkage. I'm guessing you mean the water table or the availabilty in general of water will decrease. Could you tell me a bit more about that? We will be there on the island in a couple of weeks and intend to start planting mango, banano, pitaya and avocodo trees as part of our 7(?)yr. plan to have a fairly nice rancho overlooking the lake when we retire. if water system goes to your lot line the hookup fees are almost nothing because they are geared to Nicaraguan ability to pay. Check locally,

If your project requires approval from Managua, plan on hauling water or running a very long hose from the neighbors. At residencials San Ramon in Esteli, we are 2 years and 3 months into the wait. Our hose is 150 meters long (plastic tubing as is use for drip systems in the states is the cheapest way to go).
You should also plan on putting in a water tank on a platform, probably as the first thing in your construction to facilitate construction. Plastic 100 gal tanks are available for about usd 100. A concrete and rebar platform can be designed into the house or security wall, or can be free-standing.
This tank may also serve for your house, too. In my nieghborhood in Esteli we are going thru a period of daily water outages. Most nights we have no water from 5 pm till after 10. 100 gallons in a tank would easily bridge this gap. A 200 gallon tank would probably allow you to use your washing machine to your schedule.

Hi Billy Bob, Thanks for the info. We will take the time to look around and ask the questions we need to ask regarding hooking up, where to purchase a tank and get to know the neighbors over on that part of the island. I've been checking into what everyone has said regarding construction costs too. This is a long term project for us so we have a lot of time to figure it out. Since I've done a fair amount of construction work, I may try to lay a prtion of the foundations myself. Regardless, thanks again and I look forward to "talking " with you in the future. ----Joe+olga

75 foot deep well should do it. No tank is needed. Plenty of fresh water on the island. Go there and stay for a while first. It is unique place in Nicaragua or anywhere else. But be warned that for any export business enterprise you will be dependent on the ferry for everything. Theft is rampant even by Nica standards and it is difficult to find Nicas who don't live on the island to live and work there. The place is enchanting though.

Hi Mark, Thanks for getting that info to me. I have stayed on Ometepe numerous times over the past 20 years and have been in love with it for many years. We are just now finalizing the purchase of a small property over towanrd San Ramon not far from the waterfall and the Biology Station.We don't plan on setting up an export business. Rather we love the fact that the ferry isolates us a bit. I will look into a well and the price of drilling. We don't plan on building anything extravagant since we have fairly simple tastes, so I feel that most of the construction can be done by those on the island. We're thinking basic block with a large verandah and lots of windows. Again thanks and I hope that we can stay in touch as things begin to take shape. Sincerely-Joe+olga
