Chontales, like Boaco, is a department of cattle, milk and cheese. Its population of 182,000 is spread over 6,481.27 square kilometers of rolling hills dotted with small towns between large cattle farms.
The department is composed of ten departments, Acoyapa, Comalapa, El Coral, Juigalpa, La Libertad, San Francisco de Cuapa, San Pedro de Lóvago, Santo Domingo, Santo Tomás, and Villa Sandino.
