Two week stay in Esteli
Submitted by Mike on Thu, 2008/11/20 - 19:25.
I will be starting Spanish school in Esteli on Nov. 24 and need a place to stay while attending. I turned down the home'stay option because the digs that I´ve seen are just a touch too basic for my rapidly aging bones ánd because of privacy issues.
I´m not looking for luxury like Los Arcos, just something comfortable and quiet with my own bathroom and the ability to come and go as I please without checking with or disturbing any one else. Some meals included would be good too but not a deal'breaker.
Any advice or pointers would be much appreciated.
Thanks

you might try the adds in El Esteliano magazine and see if anything fits. Hotel Nicarao has rooms of varying price, you might ask about a week rate.
Incidentally, you are right about the housing situation. Its pretty sad. Check the mattress and pillow where ever you are, and you can get bug spray and mosquito repellent at any super.
For food, one seasonal visitor swears by El Encanto restaurant east of the banks. He eats there daily when in town.
I prefer the lunch plate at Liquados Ananda in the center, but skip the soya coffee.
Also, you can eat healthy and good at the super or the market. My favorite travel or casual lunch is avocado, tomato, corn tortilla, with hot sauce to taste.

Good tips
Thanks BB. I´ve heard the Moderno and El Alpino ar also acceptable and might try to swing some deals there.
I am highly
Recommending Hotel Don Vito in Esteli. Right now,in my opinion is the Best Hotel in Esteli, hands down.By this I mean:
1)Price-$38 a night, with ALL the amenities that los arcos has, then some.
2)Service-excellent!
3)Food-Awesome.
I used to lodge our Clients at Los Arcos, but they have gone mad, their price are above $65 a night, and their food/service, now(it used to be excellent),completely suck!!!
Here is their contact info. Address: Parque Infantil 1 1/2 Cuadra al Este Telefonos: 713-4318 and 714-1420, THe owner's(Rommel) cell phone number: 851-4482 His email: rommellmeza@yahoo.com
Hotel Don Vito? where is it?
I mean in relation to Los Arcos? Thanks for the Heads up, I was a Los Arcos guy and am surprised if they have raised the room rate to almost double! I really liked the place and location for $35. a night, which I thought was a sensible and reasonable price. Hot Water Showers, (before they do the days laundry) free Computers, great roof-top patio,secure/locked room closet, decent menu, etc., With the almost certain low tourist traffic to Nicaragua this year and next, especially as it's not exactly a backpacker type of place, compared to other choices in Esteli..and there are lots, bad timing! also sad to hear the restaurant quality has declined. oh well. Bring on Hotel Don Vito!
here is their site
http://www.hoteldonvito.com
It is about 10-15 blocks South East of Los Arcos,in a safe paved area as well, in fact it's only a few blocks from Main Street(Northbound side),close to the old hospital.
Thanks a lot
it's good to have this place as a reference for my ..so far..favourite place in Nicaragua. The Majority of places in Esteli, and they are in truth mostly within the $10 to $20 range, are for me, Grubby, noisy, and with few exceptions depressing. One Mans meat is another mans poison I suppose. Thanks for another Esteli Discovery! P.S. What do you think of Real Esteli? or don't you care?
real Esteli
I NOT a soccer fan,I am a baseball fan,I got baseball in my blood, grew up playing baseball in Esteli, with balls made out of old socks and electrical black tape, and bats from a Guasimo tree!!! :-)
Under our kilts
we had the same balls. Only we kicked them around. I tell you one thing I will never forget, no big deal I suppose although you had to see it, a bunch of Cubans in Havana playing baseball with a BOTTLECAP for a ball. At least you had electric tape. so did we for cricket..you know..the best bat and ball game.
Other ideas
I stayed twice at the hotel about a block west of Shell Estelí. I am thinking it is El Chepito but it might not be. It was fine. I would guess you could haggle to $10/day for a 2-week stay. A friend of mine likes El Alpino but I think it is more expensive.
The other hotel that I have been told is inexpensive and just fine is diagonally across from Vuela Vuela (the restaurant related to Los Acros).
There are lots of other places worth checking out. Near the children's park is Hospedaje Juarez which just got a facelift and Hospedaje Tomabú which is new.
Also, there are some older hospedajes near the public market that may be fine. Older because the Cotran station used to be a couple blocks south of there. That includes a couple of the boulivard and one (name starts with an M and is probably a woman's name) on the street at the south end of the market.
All in all, I would be very surprised if you couldn't find a clean room with a private bath for $10/night or less if you agree to stay there for two weeks.
you got that
Backwards, the Hotel is los arcos, the restaurant is vuela vuela
just a comment
I am very seldom in Norway, 4-5 times in 30 years. But in March this year I was there, I did meet a wonderful Nicaraguan woman, married to a Norwegian attorney, and she made me dinner, she was from Esteli and she said hear father owned a hotel like Alpino or something, I did not take any notes, but I am pretty sure that was what she said.
According to this lady it was only 51 Nicaraguans in Norway, but there was 25.000 from Somalia!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry if I insult anybody.

Moderno
I have stayed at the Moderno for a week and it was fine. No A/C but fans. You can practice your spanish as the staff doesn't speak english. It's the cheaper version of the Hotel Alemeda. I think it was only $18/night. No meals included but there's a resteraunt. It's only a couple of blocks from the center of town. Enjoy Esteli! I'll be there for 3 weeks in December.
Thanks all
Thanks everyone for all your tips. See you in Esteli in a few days.
