The Nigerian Scam Moves to NicaraguaSubmitted by Kelly Ann Thomas on 13 October, 2008 - 07:29.
I was quite surprised to see this email in my NL Inbox. It amazes me that someone went to the trouble of creating a NL account so they could send spam via private email. The least this person could have done would be to make it look Nica-related, but that's too much effort for these scam artists. From: onethingaboutme To: Kelly Ann Thomas Subject: Dear Date: 13 October, 2008 - 06:04 Dear, I am Miss Monique Aeh I am 21 years old, the daughter of late Mr. Edmond Abeh. There is an imformation I would like you to keep very confidential, There is amount of money my Late father Mr.Edmond Abeh a Cocoa Merchant, deposited in a bank in Abidjan economical city of Cote d'Ivoire my county for safe keeping. Before the death of my father gave me every informations of this money in a bank here and also told me where the documents regarding to the deposit of the money that was issued to him by the bank where it was kept in our home and he gave me an instruction to look for a foreign partner that will help me in investing the fund wisely abroad and not to invest in Africa. The result of his test says he was poisoned and he my father said he know the people that are behind his death because of jealousy and enviness of his wealth. Misplaced skills!
The writer should obviously be in Congress explaining why the bailout is so necessary and why his/her political party wasn't to blame but the other party was!

There's a sucker born every minute
I can't believe people are stupid enough to fall for this.
Let there be peace on Earth and let it begin with me.
I deal with this
I deal with this and other scams on a daily bases. It is a multi-billion (yes billion) dollar business.
We have one individual in our area who is into it for over 2.8 million dollars. He has even traveled to Germany to see HIS money. The last call he received was from a man who works with the same company that has been exploiting him. He stated that he was appalled at what transpired and for an extra $25,000 he would take care of the situation and make sure the “others” who were doing this would be put behind bars.
Unfortunately / fortunately (depends on how you look at it) you can’t keep a person from making bad decisions.
If you have the time and want to have some fun with these scammers follow this link. It’s how to turn that scam back on the scammer. BUT be very careful and not give out personal information.

You mean this is not real?
but the letter sounded so honest and logical.
Now I really lost my faith in my fellow planet inhabitants!

I need a new online hobby...The wing nut flaggers on the Miami Craig's List Rant N Rave finally got my whole account shut down because I don't have a Miami area phone to verify my humanness.....If you have a phone number in the So Fla area and got a minute to help it's easy... all computers, no bs or humans involved... PM Me for details...I would appreciate it because they have shut down my anti smear truth campaign there...
But baiting the scammers sounds like fun too. And a blood sport on eBay... my old stomping grounds....Sweet...

If you want
It’s fun but you do need to do some homework. Make a fake email address, ID, Money order, western union order, get a forwarding phone number ( I use K7.net) and then read the stories to get a feel for what they do.
My longest keeping them at bay was 4 months. Had them going back and forth to western union until they caught on. At one point I had two of them going at each other for “taking my money”.
If you like to get religious on them try using the following:

make yourself a church sign thanking them for their help, that will get you a little more play.
Did you see the Dateline Predator Show
about 18 months ago? They went after the Nigerian Scammers! They ran the scammers raw and then busted them on tape!
http://insidedateline.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/03/20/95321.aspx?p=2 I'll have to check out the K7.net for a number If you want to use parochial sign on them, there are some nice ones at http://atom.smasher.org/

Yes I did
Ya, that was good, unfortunately I do not have the budget to do what they did but it would be fun.
Amazing
I am very surprised that someone did this--just because it is a lot of time to SPAM a community that is likely a lot smarter than where you usually see this stuff. I didn't do an accurate count but it looks like maybe 50 of us (me included) were "lucky enough" to receive this offer.
Anyway, account disabled.
I think that scammer
has too much time on their hands...or maybe she is tired of the competition in Nigeria and is contemplating a move to the Nicaragua....

And I thought
I had hit the jackpot at last. I know people fall for stuff, but i have often wondered if they ever pull this one off.ZZT
This scam works because people are greedy
The Nigerian scam is hugely successful. According to a 1997 newspaper article:
"We have confirmed losses just in the United States of over $100 million in the last 15 months," said Special Agent James Caldwell, of the Secret Service financial crimes division. "And that's just the ones we know of. We figure a lot of people don't report them."
But this is a new scam, right? People are falling for it because they've yet to catch on? Wrong. Very, very wrong. The Nigerian Scam has been emptying the pockets of victims for decades — first through letters, then with faxes, and now via e-mail. In its earliest incarnation — which dates to the 1920s — it was known as 'The Spanish Prisoner' con. In that long-ago version, businessmen were contacted by someone trying to smuggle the scion of a wealthy family out of a prison in Spain. But of course the wealthy family would shower with riches those who helped secure the release of the boy. Those who were suckered into this paid for one failed rescue attempt after another, with the fictitious prisoner continuing to languish in his non-existent dungeon, always just one more bribe, one more scheme, one more try, away from being released.
