Living in Granada

0

We will be moving to Granada for a few months starting in December. I was wondering about a variety of things: 1) Does anyone know of art classes for adults 2) Is there anyplace to fence (esgrima) in the area? 3) Are there sports such as tennis? 4) Is there a good gym for working out? 5) Would it be possible to enroll my 13 year old in school for just a few months? Suggestions on schools? 6) Also looking for dance classes.

Thank you for any information.

Welcome to N.L.

I wonder of all your questions, when the school year starts? imagining myself what it was like to be a 13yr old, and then over to Nic-what? to go to school?

January

The school year starts either in late January or early February. Ends around the end of November. Part of this is not remembering and part of this is the variable of when it really started, how many strikes, ... This is the same in Costa Rica.

13 yr old in school

Well the alternative is homeschooling with Mom as teacher. for some reason she asked if she could try school

Gatica

I had to ask around

but there are painting classes and sort of a "painter's club" ,Tennis is only at the Jockey Club and they have a hefty country club membership fee, there is a gym with mostly weight training equipment here, they have some treadmills and bikes It's about $12 a month, towels no showers. ....I don't know if Warren has opened his pilates style-yoga place yet...School should be no problem and dance classes are free at most any dance club on the weekend...But you'll have to start a fencing club in Granada if you want to duel with anything other than machetes. I think fencing classes would go over big at any NGO or voluntario School program...

Hey Immigrant butter man

if you know so much about Granada..isn't it time you moved on? Esteli per se, great weather, no bugs, cheaper country clubs.. etc.,

Fencing

wow.. that reminds me of my days in university.

Thanks for juggling my memory.

No surprises there

What to expect from a prussian.

Are you talking about my poor memory?

Or about my university days?

Leave it up to a Scott to make fun of the noble sport of fencing... Highland games...YUK! :-)

When are you visiting John? I need to put in an order for Hot Banana Sauce from China town.

caber tossing

coming soon to SJDS.

When that happens

it will be a sad, sad day lad...

Just kidding, I can't wait for the first annual SJDS Highland Games.

Esgrima or Fencing

The sport is to my liking, saw it in the olympics. There used to be a fencing school in Concordia (located between Esteli and Jinotega) in the 1800's. The inhabitants of that town used to be known for their fencing abilities. According to www.manfut.org/jinotega/concordia1.html, Thomas Belt wrote about this in his travels to the town in 1873.

Perhaps it should be encouraged as a sport in Nicaragua.

Passage from "A naturalist in Nicaragua" re fencing

"Many of the men we met wore long swords instead of the usual machetes. There is a school for learning fencing at Concordia, and the people of the district are celebrated for being expert swordsmen."

Maybe

We could hace a Nica living fence off?

Now that I'm old, slow and out of shape I'd fully expect to have my butt kicked.

I'd still be up for the challenge. :-)

Come on folks we could make it a fundraiser.

I guess

I don't know, next time I'm down there. I've never fenced although it looks like some of my ancestors did. It could be possible you could beat me.

On Guard, Touche!

Have you seen

and thanks by the way, the photos on the concordia/Jinotega site you gave reference to. That would have elicited some comment from the crusty Englishman that we used to know..talk about fencing.

I would have asked him if he

I would have asked him if he had read "A Naturalist in Nicaragua" by Thomas Belt since it has a nice narrative on Jinotega. I think he must have.

On a side note, what a great book. I just discovered it was free online and skimmed through it. It looks like Nicaragua hasn't changed much since the late 19th century.

Naturalists

I don't know if you have read any of Patrick O'brians books, great stories of the Royal Navy in the French, Spanish,Wars. The main characters are Captain Jack Aubery and a naturalist sidekick Dr Stephen Maturin. They made voyages all over the world including South America, Australia,Middle East etc., There was a film made a couple of years ago starring Russell Crowe called "Master and Commander" one of my alltime favourites. Anyway, if you get the chance pick up one of his books, great stories and accurate references of science and nature from that time in History.

Good movie

I've seen Master and Commander and it's also one of my favorites. I didn't know it was based on a book and that there are similar stories, I'll definitely look into them.

Thanks!

Fencing

That's what we do in Scotland to keep the Sheep in on a Saturday Night. Just how much hefty is the fee for the club in Granada?

For some reason the membership

committee hasn't approached me yet, but word on the street is the initiation fee is $1200 US and $200 a month. They do have the only polo grounds in Nicaragua...

“I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.”

Groucho Marx

they also have a

Olympic sized pool, a swell Sunday Brunch and at one time even had horse racing...
