Required Singing of National Anthem

Submitted by DanPolley on 2 September, 2008 - 11:07.

This is a translation of an article reported in La Prensa Students at all public and private schools in Nicaragua will be required to sing the national anthem every day, according to a decree issued Monday by the Central American country's leftist Sandinista government. The decree was set to come into force Tuesday across the country and would be strictly monitored, Education Minister Miguel de Castilla said at a press conference. The minister explained that in recent years Nicaraguan youth have lost respect for 'symbols' of the homeland, and the move was aimed at 'recovering traditions.' The national anthem will have to be sung daily before lessons start in all classes at pre-school, primary education and secondary education centres, De Castilla said. He warned that authorities would punish students and teachers who do not abide by the new rule. Translation provided by http://www.monstersandcritics.com

NATIONALISM VS GLOBALIZATION

hopefully the anthem will stir Patriotism and hopefully instill a love of country.

the anthem was sung ALWAYS first thing in the morning when i was a young pup....

It would be sung outside in the courtyard and the whole school would assemble and sing at the same time.

Funny how Marxists de-emphasized nationalism and instead supplanted it with "internationalism". Today we have the same thing, but it is called "globalization".

For example, in the name of globalization and the new politically correct international man you cant find the following:

1)No more pork soup in Paris, it has been deemed to be anti-islamic.

2) No beef served in any british airways flight for fear of offending hindus.

3) No roast dog in China (at least during the olympics) because PETA would have a fit. The same PETA that likened chickens raised for KFC the equivalent of a nazi death camp!.

4) for a while, no foie gras in Chicago, until Dictator Dailey could not handle quitting cold turkey.

I am always wary of those who would try to homogenize us into a bland blob of sameness.

The National Anthem

Will be sung Mondays and Fridays, twice per week, not every day.

Could you post this on TRN too?

I would be curious to see their take on this...

I see this as a good thing

I'm not one that generally is in favor of overly patriotic gesture. I do find it incredible that anyone living in the US would have any objection to someone knowing, singing or reciting the national anthem of any country.

I remember singing the national anthem every morning in school. While it did not make me more patriotic it did provide a small sense of belonging.

I hear often how bad the Nicaraguan school system is. Singing the anthem every morning will not make it any better, but it may just inspire some young Nicaraguan to work on making the country a better place for them and their children.

If it does nothing else than inspire ONE person to strive for higher goals it is, in my opinion, well worth the effort.

Sorry for the kids

I am a Nicaraguan, and would say that there's not much to be proud about Nicaragua as a political entity.

I already forgot the words of the national anthem because everything it said, had a shocking contrast with reality. It is like shallow advertising with no substance to back it up. If we could build a semi-decent country, respect for it would fall into place naturally, there would not be a need to force it on the poor kids.

I see it as a good thing

there is no structure in schools nowadays and hopefully this would bring some discipline. Chaq

School days

When I was a kid we had to sing the national anthem and salute Her Majesty the Queen every morning. Any kid who didn't belt out the lines in a loud voice got an hour of detention at the end of the school day.

I'm not sure why anyone would object to Nicaraguan kids sing the national anthem.

Free thinking

Some of us value free thought over group conformance. Some of us think tribalism can be dangerous. And some of us just don't like being arbitrarily bossed around (and via empathy don't like anyone else being bossed around either).

I refused to say the pledge of allegiance when I was in school. Fortunately at that time and place (Seattle 1970's) it was optional.

I generally agree

But think this is one (of the many) of the things we who do not vote here....or for many..... even live (or been) here need to butt out of. There is a lot of discussion on here about what the NICAS think of us, etc. I think helping them without the quid pro quo of telling them how they need to act, is one thing that goes a long way towards good relations with them.

So, if you are on here to find out about this country.....as in the stated objectives of the site, which I think are valuable....one man's opinion is live and learn and keep your mouth shut about things like this. And it comes from someone who has worked alongside people in developing countries for a long time and is making a place and friends here.ZZT

Two angles, both sides

I don't entirely disagree, but...

There is a difference between "objecting" as in posting on an English internet site and "objecting" as in being in-country and actively promoting disobedience or writing editorials in newspapers.

Also, it seems the "butt out" advice must apply equally to both sides of the argument...who are any of us to say they *should* require singing the anthem?

The site is supposedly not for that.

That is one of my points. I make this because it has been the subject of a lot of back and forth and has interfered with the usefulness of what can be a very good site. Guess just trying to remind "us" of that.

I do agree that on a site such discussion is fine from a philosophical viewpoint an that is different than butting in in person. When that is the case, your second para is right on. Trouble is that we could pick apart rule after rule...here, there and everywhere.... to no real end. ZZT

The actual Anthem

Wikipedia offers some information about the anthem and includes a link to an MP3 of it.

The "unofficial" National Anthem...

Although officially that's the actual anthem, if you want to bring a Nica to tears - especially one in exile - play "The Mora Limpia" and watch the reaction (better after a few drinks).

The Pledge?

When I saw this article yesterday it made me think of The Pledge that one had to do in schools in the U.S. What particularly irritated me was that over one summer the pledge changed. Somehow, ", under god," got added. That change was what made me first think about the concept of separation of church and state. All of a sudden, it seemed that the government required you to have a god to participate in the U.S. life.

we were just arguing about that...

the wife and I, Sue says that was under Truman , I thought it was Roosevelt ;)

Good ol' Ike

You've already noticed from FYL's link that you were both wrong! :)

I'll just add that "under God" was taken from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and was signed into law by Ike in 1954. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance

My assumption

My assumption was that they were just suggesting I was about 85 years old. :-)

Yes, but . . .

Knowing Doug's ironic, wry humor, I'm sure you're right, but I'm sure he's not old enough to remember the actual change like we both do! I was afraid some of the younger readers might think their presidential choices were more or less correct since your link didn't name Ike specifically (if I remember correctly)! ;)
