Las Cruces, New Mexico..

What a change from So Cal and Arizona. Green, cool at night and what a nice hotel, the Mission Inn, they gladly accept pets and the room is by far the nicest one we have been in so far. The Oceanside CA Best Western was OK, until the jackass night manager, without knocking tried to open our door at 01:45. Luckily my wife had the chain on the door, the Dobermans don't like strangers barging in, could have been messy. The jackass night manager, had no good explanation for this attempted intrusion, creepy was the best term that I could think of.

The Best Western in Mesa Grande, AZ was OK, the room was kind of small, but nice. We are heading into Texas today in the morning we will find a shipping company and dump most of the stuff from the trailer and ship it the rest of the way. The load has been a workout for the van and the flat tire/bent rim incident has convinced me that the trailer is just not up to the maximum load that some how materialize into it. I just don't know where all that crap came from, but it just filled itself right up.

We elected to swing down and cross into Mexico from Texas, cutting out over 500 miles of Mexican roads. All the bad press on Mexico has caused some concern, even allowing for the usual exaggeration from the US press (yes, yes I know, more US bashing, get over it) One of the passes we need to cross is about 8000 ft, that and the reputation for crappy roads seems to indicate a lighter load on the trailer. As it is we have had to cut the A/C and run with the defrosters on full to keep from overheating on the mountain passes we have crossed so far. Traveling with three large dogs has been better than I thought, not much trouble finding hotels that are pet friendly for an average of $10 more. The 55 gallons of water and 12 volt pump have worked great, the pump will be installed at the farm to give us pressurized water for the house. It has been so nice to have plenty of good water as some places the water is rather funky.

Time to hit the road.

Your Adventure

Reading your posts with great interest as we will be doing this same trip in January with our white pitbull in a 2005 Ford Escape.

You are living one of my dreams, traveling through central america with my 2 dobies (dream has been altered as of late with the addition of a 20 pound white male poodle). Good for you, hope all goes well and everyone is safe on the road and at the destination.

I will just have to be satisfied with taking the dobies and poodle, who is an olympic quality swimmer, out to key biscayne at low tide after work today and let them go wild. Will be thinking of you all on your journey and will raise a glass. David

It has been a great time..

so far, about 2300 miles, the dobies are looked over by my mix breed 85 LB little girl who runs the show, she keeps them in line pretty well. Finding pet friendly places to stay has been easier than I thought and everybody has taken to traveling quite well...

Thanks for the kind thoughts

I just got back from Nicaragua

Mexico was fine, but you need to be careful if you are going down through Chih, Mexico. I took the road that goes south on the Gulf of Mexico and it was great. I have a Honda CRV, but for larger vehicles such as yours, I would travel to San Antonio, Tx and then down to Laredo where there is a brand new highway to Monterey, Mx and there you can get the highway to Mexico City. The biggest problem your going to have is going throught customs in Central America (specially in Honduras). Be extremely careful when you get there(you will have 20-30 males trying to fight over who gets to do the paperwork and overcharge you).

Your three dogs ...

... must be getting awful tired pulling that trailer. Maybe you should up their rations and give them each a shot of anabolic steroids when you hit the Mexican border. Strap Mrs. Doug to the top of the roof with a shotgun to ride guard and open the throttle!

Mrs. Doug

Left her Mossberg BullPup at home. Not a good idea to give her another 12 guage just now fyi (VBG)
