What does it cost to eat out in Nicaragua? I am sure that answer varies all over the country. Let's see what experiences people have.

simple meal in Rivas

two people enjoyed a salad with pollo ala plancha on top, two glasses of wine, a beer and an Ensa for 400 cordobas last evening at the Nicarao Hotel . That included a 60 cordoba tip.

I lived a few years on the 15 cordoba street food in San Juan del Sur and am thankful to be able to enjoy a nice meal and leave a tip. Best buy in Nicaragua IMO is Three Finger Jimmy's in Granada. Imported meat and priced like an upscale Nica Restaurant. Try the meatloaf. Oh, there is not 15 cordoba street food in SJdS anymore.

food

wow...big bucks for food there in managua...i can go out feed well with my wife for MUCH less than $20....tiptop is a ripoff...scabby chicken for bigbucks....the markets and tiendas all sell much better chicken with plenty of ingredients to make your own food cheaper...better...and cooking on the beach...perfect

Food

My favorite topic!

Friday's last week was $80 for five people...some wine was involved as I remember

At Galaria

La Boheme (spelling?) The paella there is perfect..The best I've had but it's probably the most expensive, non-hotel resturant in Nicaraga...Bottle of wine and paella for two $90

Tacoento (spelling?) Very resonably priced...had a few edible meals there. Most of the meal are around $5 the most expensive thing on the menu is about $10

Tequiellas - Mexican...$8 to $12 Been there three times - never had a good meal. May be because there was no wine involved.

Urban - Foundue place...not a big fondue fan but really like the cheese foundue. We also had meat and chocolate fondue. About half the price you would pay in the US. Three of us about $60...again - a little wine involved

ANTOJITOS DEL DESIERTO IN ESTELI

Just before entering Esteli you will find this exotic restaurant that features wild and exotic game.

Last time I was there I had cusuco it was less than U$5.00

EL Seminario in LindaVista

Okay this one is a small, clean! Airconditioned Comedor owned by an Italian chef. Nice inexpensive Meditarrian menu, food is cooked daily in an open kitchen so you can see what is going on. Five sizes of cold Frosted Mugs Draft beer and great wines aswell, also at night, personal pizzias, made to order, no Hawaian Pizzias. 10 indoor tables and 8 outdoor tables...

Its next door to the Linda Vista Catholic church. Semafaros Linda Vista 1 block to the west across the street from Subways......Phil, you will enjoy the company and a nice place to stop on your way west or east from the country. Their land line is 254-6541 closed Mondays

Somoto and Ocotal

In both cities I have found less choices than Estelí (mostly because they are just smaller) but prices about the same. For a good meal in Ocotal in a nice setting, there is a restaurant attached to a hotel on the road that forks off the highway to the right going into town. (Sorry but I forget the name but it is only about two blocks after the fork and there are not other restaurants nearby.) Prices typical for "real meals" (C$100-C$140) and the setting is a nice escape from the heat and dust of the center of town.

For a low-end alternative, both towns have new public markets. You can find decent food in stalls in the market for from C$20-C$50. In both markets I have asked for "vegetarian" and they came up with a plate that, besides the expected rice and beans included cooked assorted vegetables.

Restaurante El Somoteño

North of the bus depot in Somoto, home of the Mejia Godoys, on the PanAm highway, a short walk from the gorgeous 'central' park (not near the center of town) & Hotel Panamericano. Open air, big thatched roof hut with plenty of Nicas sitting around bottles of FdC with buckets of ice. The only place in town that took a credit card. No ATM machines in Somoto.

Good steak dinners for two ran C$360 ($18.50), but that included 4 Victorias each. With the third we came to an understanding, but after the fourth Victoria we weren't talking to each other.

Corinto

There are lots of "tipico" restaurants in Corinto but I have only eaten at Costa Azul and the Peruvian restaurant across the street. Both are on the water and have excellent food. They are, of course, primarily seafood.

I remember prices from two years ago in the C$100 to C$150 range for excellent and big meals.

Esteli

You can get a filling meal in Estelí for from C$15 to C$300. Here are some data points.

  • Nacatamale (chicken, pork or, with a bit of careful shopping, vegetarian): C$10-C$15.
  • Decent cafetín breakfast: C$30
  • Fritanga lunch or dinner: C$20 to C$30
  • Cafetín lunch: C$30-C$50
  • Restaurant lunch or dinner plate with salad, some sort of meat, rice, french fries: C$75-C$120
  • Restaurant lunch or dinner fish plate with salad, various styles of fish, rice, french fries: C$85-C$150
  • Restaurant lunch or dinner with shrimp, salad, rice, french fries: C$120-C$200
  • Ethnic (Chinese or Italian is all I can think of) nice lunch or dinner: C$45 to C$220
  • Home-made popsicle: C$1
  • Chocolate-covered banana: C$.50 to C$1
  • Eskimo or Dos Pinos ice cream cone: C$8-C$10

in Managua

Tip Top about $40 for four people

There is a Argentinean one on carretera Masaya . . . Is about $100 for 5 with a bottle of wine . . .

There is one close to Galleria kind of Mexican . . .It is about $70 for five people . . .

That requires some research

There is another new place here in gringolandia owned by Canadians that serves a BBQ Beef sandwich that I have been wanting to try, but tomorrow's big food news is the LaColonia SuperMercado is finally going to open YEAH!!! I'll post some pics...
