"Busted in Nicaragua Submitted by fyl on 15 August, 2008 - 08:45. There is an amusing Nicaragua travel/adventure story in The Seattle Stranger"....

I have received a few eMails from friends and family in the Seattle area that are worried about me since reading this hatchet job... I am very familiar with that counter culture rag, I gave lot's of ad dollars over the years to the blue haired pierced and tattooed emo/alt hipsters that run it but ever since I read this story I can't help but question it's authenticity and it bothers me. I am going on my second year of living in Granada and this story just doesn't ring true...A gringo going to jail in this town? With money in his pocket? Just seems implausible. All we have in Granada is tourism and mostly the pony tailed back packer surfer types...Well if you make up a story about going to jail over an insignificant amount of pot you are in effect scaring away even the most adventurous young tourists....Is it accidental fiction or purposely scripted to scare away the few young tourists that might come thru town anymore? My eMail to the Stranger went unanswered....

Absolute truth is a very rare and dangerous commodity in the context of professional journalism.

That story was the story that lead me to this sight

For whatever reason you want to believe, I read counter culture stories of many kinds. That particular story bothered me.

I can understand that Nica may not want to end up with the kind of reputation that country that allows drugs gets.... but it already does in a small way. I have read several stories about what goes on at Bluefields, and nothing will draw a drug tourist like cheap cocaine. It sounds like even the police do drugs there. Here is a story: http://wakling.com/nicaragua-charge-it-up

I fancy myself a writer and realise that people love to tell stories. The more edgy and the more hair raising the story the more likely the story will be read (and enjoyed). I had so much trouble believing that a cop on bicycle didn't take $900 in Any Country outside of the USA. The Seattle Stranger is a seriously counter coulture mag and their readers thrive on stories like his. I have read some lulu stories that were local to Seattle in there. In other words, as a local to Seattle, I have to say that the Seattle Stranger is more for enternainment for college kids than anything else. The same could said about the Seattle Times, but for other reasons.

You know another thing about this guy..... The minute he is in Costa Los Angelas he smoked right away. Even a seasoned smoker would be too paranoid for an entire month, and I am serious. I have a story in the Philippines that makes my hair stand up to think about, so I know.
