Elastomeric PaintSubmitted by fyl on 31 July, 2008 - 17:20.
I am looking for elastomeric paint. I know Sherwin Williams, Behr, Kelly-Moore and others make it. I talked to the local Sherwin Williams guy and all he tried to do was say "yes, we have it" and then hand me information about the paint that he actually did have which did not include elastomerics. One other store that carried another brand (Corona, possibly) had never heard of it. It is basically a very thick 100% acrylic paint designed to apply to concrete and stucco. It expands and contracts so it makes a long-term waterproof coating over concrete. It will become "all the outside" for the domes at CoolTop. I know a bunch of places (including Home Depot) in the U.S. that has it but it seems absurd for us to ship something like 100 gallons of paint if it can be found here. I would be particularly interested to know if any local (meaning Central America) manufacturer made it. Any suggestions? ( categories: )

What you need is to look for
What you need is to look for is probrably Lanco paints which is sold by some hardware stores and also distributed by sol industrial in managua. The place with the brick display more than likely sells lanco paints because that is their marketing display. They also have a authorize distributor in managua in carretera Norte, puente a desnivel 800 mts al norte, 100 mts arriba tel. 251-3940. Their website has some info on what you are looking for http://www.lancopaints.com/english/products/2.1.6_w_elastomeric.html
Perfect
I was pretty sure someone would make it but had missed Impulsadora del Norte and after about 30 minutes to escape from the guy that didn't have a clue I decided that shopping here would save time.
Thanks.
inpulsadora del norte
on the pan am has a spiffy display of a concrere block full of water that doesn´t leek because it is coated. Don´t know the brand name.
As far a Corona paint, I´ve had best luck with the big Corona store across from the furniture store just east of the Big Enitel store downtown.
Lanco
They have a few products that will work, not cheap but good stuff, a 5 gallon bucket of their best sealer is around $100.
Located at several places around MGA, but the phonebook also shows a main store (may be the office though).
Pretty normal
That's pretty much the low end (Behr, for example) in the U.S. in elastomerics. I found one U.S.-based "discount paint" place that had one elastomeric at $450/5 gallons.
The stuff only covers 50-100 sq. ft./gallon and you need two coats so it is expensive but, in the case of the dome, it is also the roof. So, it works out fine and you have no rain gutters to clean and no zinc to rust.
Lanco

coating
Don´t knowe it it makes a difference, but what I was familiar with in the desert a few years ago was marketed as a coating, not a paint, and was speicified for use on roofs. Different brands had differend direction and the premium brand had a grey primer that was recommended. Cracks needed to be patchted with a filer and screen.
Cost about 4 years ago for the better brands in AZ was $80 /5gal.
