That's steep, instead of this abrupt route, the Nic gov't should have invested more on the Esteli-San Rafael del Norte route. The San Rafael del Norte - Jinotega route is already in good shape. Or should have built a direct Esteli - Jinotega road through the "llanos de colon" (plains of colon).
That would put a lot more traffic on the Pan Am between San Isidro and Esteli. That road is steep with lots of curves. Adding big trucks full of coffee and such from the Jinotega area would not be a good thing.

Esteli-Jinotega Road
I noticed that you had a picture of the esteli-jinotega road here: http://www.nicaliving.com/node/2355 Was this the direct route through San Marcos?
Panam
That section of the panam needs more lanes and other modifications (possibly tunnels).
I almost sh... in my pants while I was driving on that road
very nice sightseen but scary . . .
