More info

From trehugger.com:
a group of high-powered Nicaraguan businessmen committed to invest close to $92 million to generate 40 MW of wind energy this year.

Note that the link at the end of the article is broken.

19 in all

land was leased for 35 years for wind energy

you could have invested in the project return of 18% , 500,000 minium

there are several pads near the lake then several more that are in on the otherside of the pan am going toward the coastal mountains.

this will be good

there is another project like this in the works just south and up on the crest of the coastal mountains

This information is incorrect

All of the information previously stated in this thread is incorrect

i talked with

the principles of this project and this is what he stated to me ... so business plan has changed your saying sean. they are not leaseing the land for 35years...how many turbines are there going to be?

there is another project slated for the hills in behind this one. do you know about that one. the salvedorns project. they were looking for investors.

so with your updated homework what did you come up with ...

Chon, Thanks for the very

Chon, Thanks for the very useful and informative post. Dan Polley

Its not an issue of

Its not an issue of homework.

The "principals" that you spoke to are obviously from one of the many "puro aire" projects that are in the "planning" stages.

The project is 40MW, 19 2.1MW turbines and will be completed by the end of November with another 40MW by next november.

Land contracts are not, and have never been for, 35 years.

I would be interested in knowing off-line who these principals are that claim to be involved in our project.

The project is not looking for equity (and 500k would never be considered even if it were. This is a 95MM project).

Towers are being erected currently.

I know this because i manage this project.

Cheers,

well i pulled into

the site several months ago talked with the man that said he leased the land for 35 years to the developers for this project ...and went on to talk more about the project.

i guess its just the norm every one is full of shit down here ... i was just passing on what i was told...thats it

the project for investment was from the salvadoreños in the mountains behind . carlos i belive was the name of the man that drove me into the zone and chated to me about investing in there project on the land daniel the gringo has.

i drove by the other day your project is coming along nicely. great project i wish you great success .

I apologize if my response

I apologize if my response was a little abrasive.

Its just frustrating when others (other projects) try and take credit for what we have done.

Some facts that may be of interest.

*the project will save between 25 and 35 million USD in oil imports per anum for Nica--greatly assisting negative pressure on the current acount. *the project will replace 138,000 tonnes in C02 emissions per anum *these are the largest turbines in LAmer outside of Brazil *this is the largest FDI that exists today in Nica *the GON has been extremely supportive of the project and has shown exemplorary efforts and respect for the investment

Cheers,

Nicaragua's generating capacity

I'm a control room operator at the electric power plant in San Antonio and so I'm interested in megawatts in general. I was surfing around looking for Nicaragua's generating capacity and the only thing I found stated that the country has 479MW's capacity and that a great deal of it is made through burning oil. Is that actually a correct total MWs capacity for the country? It seems very, very low. The wind turbine project you are running sounds interesting. The boiler/turbine/generators I work at are natural gas and coal, and the coal is Filthy with a capital "F". How many MWs will your turbine project produce per turbine?

Nicaragua has 818MW

Nicaragua has 818MW installed capacity (656 effective) and a demand of 550+-.

The problem is that much of that installed capacity is not fully operational, unreliable, expensive or only available for part of the year.

For examp Geosa (thermal) rutinely produces 50MW despite its 100mw capacity and Momotombo (Geotherm)has 2 30MW turbines but only uses one machine at a time because the other is unvariablly undergoing maintenance.

we also have +-30% losses (15% technical/15%theft) in Nicaragua which greatly affects the system/price/service greatly.

Very complete information is available at the National Dispatch web page in the "descarga de archivos section".

Current generation capacity

I believe the current number is a bit over 500MW but not much and most comes from diesel generators. So, yes, that works out to 100 watts per person average consumption.

Wikipedia shows a lower number (about 334MW) from 2006 CIA fact book data.

To put this in perspective, that puts electricity consumption for the average Nicaraguan between 60 (2006 data) and 100 (current data) watts per hour. The same Wikipedia page puts U.S. per capita consumption at 1460 watts. In addition, other energy consumption (fuel for vehicles and heating) in the U.S. is going to be many times that of Nicaragua.

The table is pretty interesting. Neither is Nicaragua at the bottom or the U.S. at the top.

wind turbines

Sorry, I just saw above that it will be 2.1 MWs per turbine. Sounds great.

When you say mountains

When you say mountains behind do you mean the land on the other side of the road where turbines have also been placed?

If so--thats still our project. It will be very very dificult for the other projects to get turbines given the climate in the WTG market.

the higher area

in the back where the mountain looks like a saddle it was proposed there will be putting turbines up there. you would be still looking a little to the south of your project.
