Cost of bricksSubmitted by Mike on 23 June, 2008 - 15:49.
Can anyone tell me the current cost of high-quality bricks in places like Mga, SJDS, Esteli etc.? Also, have you noticed any change recently in the cost of bricks?

Latest rumor
I was just told C$2/brick in Estelí. We will be buying a bunch soon so I get to see what reality is.
In the north, the place that seems to be serious about making them in on the Pan Am in Yalaguina. You won't miss it.

Thanks for answering so quickly FYl. Can you indulge me with the answer to another dumb question/ What size brick are you referring to ... about 24 x 11.5 x 10 cm?
Just measured one
It seems to be 24 x 6.5 x 10. That's in my wall but they seem to be the norm here. I do remember that the BoM for the main building has two different size bricks in it--one downstairs and one upstairs. But, it isn't here so I can't look it up.
bricks
The bricks here are bigger, softer, uglier, and less uniform than uS bricks but they compensate by using lots of them and very thick mortar joints. There are definely two qualities being sold here in Esteli, with the better fired and more uniform ones coming from up north. Prices tend to go up during the rainy season to compenstae for more firewood needed to half fire them.
Soaking bricks
Do Nicaraguan masons soak the bricks in water before laying them in, or do they just put them in dry?
Yes, they do
They soak them. Or at least the masons I have worked with do. Same for tile.
