Nicaraguan ecostoves

Submitted by Mike on 19 June, 2008 - 10:33.

Here is some information on Prolena's ecostove operation in Managua. Compared to open-hearth baking, the stoves need half the wood and drastically reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and indoor pollutants. The health of women cooking over these stoves and their children is much improved (not to mention the planet).

I believe the stoves are subsidized and quantities are limited so I am not sure they can be bought by anyone other than vulnerable people, but I'm willing to bet a home handyman could bash one up given the plans.

If anyone objects to my use of the phrase 'handyman' ... I suppose a more correct phrase might be 'handyperson', or perhaps, 'person of hands'.

They are sold to anyone...

that wants one, and are great!! Buy one for relatives or friends that cook with wood. They had a lot of them and sales were slow. They need to sell a certain number for their grant, so anyone that is interested, go get one.

I have three of them, different models;

The caretakers family loves them, the open barrel model gets used for coffee roasting they have a big wok shaped pan that fits just right

Thanks for bringing them up Mike, seems like we are tracking the same on several things.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate

Yes Doug ...

... we seem to be like-minded about many things.
