Under the malinche tree
There was a Malinche tree in front of Pingpong’s pulperia in Guanacaste where we would tie our horses up. They had the only phone for miles around. You would get your name on the list for a call and go next door to Julio’s bar and wait for your name to be called.
In the heat of late summer the tree gave off an unmistakable aroma… and strong. One of the regulars there after a few too many, would make it out to his horse and ride off half asleep. No matter how much he was healed over in the saddle, the horse always took him home.
