Has Aduanas Flipped Out?

Aduanas, who used to seem almost sane, seems to have flipped out. Here are some of my recent experiences. I would like to hear from anyone else who has had problems recently.

  • You used to pay the customs fees for things send through the post office in the post office. That changed a year ago so that you have to get the paperwork in the post office, go to BANPRO and then back to the post office.
  • When our generator (a big one in a crate) arrived, aduanas wanted a serial number. Well, we didn't have one on any paperwork and told them so. They said they needed to check it. We (guessing) told them there wasn't one on the generator. They said they would open the crate and look and if there was they would charge us $100. (It turned out there wasn't but I am not exactly sure even if there was, what they were going to check it against.)
  • I still am fighting over the radios that I can't import without TELCOR permission that TELCOR doesn't give permission for.
  • I bought a used Nokia N800 palmtop computer and, not wanting to deal with postal customs, send it here via DHL. Well, customs decided that as it was made by Nokia, small and rectangular, it was a cellular phone (which requires TELCOR permission). Things such as an invoice that said "internet tablet", the original packing box and manual that clearly stated what it was and the fact that it had no keyboard to enter a phone number didn't seem to "concern" them.
  • On this "Nokia thing", now that we agree it is not a phone, I still need to FAX a copy of my cédula to aduanas. Why? Because, while it isn't a telephone, "any electronic apparatus requires TELCOR approval".

I think this last item is aduanas jodiendo me because I was right it wasn't a phone as in the last few weeks I have received a box of electronics parts (including two multimeters), some electronic lights, two cameras and some MP3 players but, it any case,it is a pain in the ass.
