MRS and Conservatives Lose StatusSubmitted by fyl on 12 June, 2008 - 07:14.
Yesterday, the Supreme Electoral Council took away the legal status of the MRS and the Conservative Party as a party. This, as you would expect, means they cannot participate in the November election and, apparently for the MRS, in the 2011 presidential election. (I say apparently because I heard this on the radio but didn't understand why the MRS was singled out.) The MRS is saying words like "dictatorship" and "return to Somocizmo". They also say it is all the work of the "pacto". Is it really? I don't like what I am hearing but that is my personal position. I know some Sandinistas that consider the MRS a disgrace to the ideas of Sandinismo and feel they are preventing the FSLN from doing their job. Also, on a "world level" there are lots of two-party (and virtual one-party) states. There are also people that feel the "35% is enough to win" law is bogus (even though that tends to be way above the "could have voted" percentage in the U.S., for example) so maybe "getting rid of the competition" is better for democracy. La Prensa
has an article on this issue. They are suggesting that this is an attempt by Danielito to install a dictatorship.
The article goes on to say that both the US Ambassador & European Union have both notified Danielito that aid may ceased to come into the country if this type of behaviour continues.
