What's the standard police/ speeding ticket bribe these days?Submitted by Amanda on 10 June, 2008 - 23:28.
I know how cynical it sounds...but we got stopped twice this week...the first time I was going to give them $20, but was not discrete enough with my wallet and ended up having to pay $45. Today, on the way to the airport we were stopped again....and all we had was 2 20 cord bills, a $1 bill, and some cords in change...anyway, though I'm fluent in Spanish, I have found that "not understanding" generally makes life easier sometimes, so I just looked at them really blankly and told them that they could keep my license and I would get a new one in the states, or I could pay the "fine" in cash right then and they could give it back. We got the license back...but it made me wonder what the standard is these days. Also, we were thinking it might be good to have a bunch of laminated color copies of our drivers licenses with us to leave with the police...any feedback? (of course the other option would be to not speed, but that will never work for my husband) ( categories: )

Foe a ticket,they normally
Foe a ticket, they normally tell you its going to cost 3-60 dollars, but in the end i never give them more than 100 cords<5.00>
Maybe the system works
I am no saint, I have been in lotsa trouble in the USA for my driving. With that said;
What if there were no police patrolling the streets? Would your life be better if they didn't do that? Is free will to drive any way you want safe for anyone or their pets and other property. In the USA our government paid for the right early on to insure (much less) corruption. They pay their cops Shit in Nicaragua, and the cops have to go out and actually earn their money. It does keep the roads safer and the infractions you mention in this thread would be substatial punishment in the USA, Canada etc. I have a DUI and I cannot even Enter Canada anymore for instance. I used to live Right On The Border and couldn't cross over. So if you all say you love this country, and are glad it is Not America then it is within your pride to admit that you are not doing the country any good by racing through it as if it is nothing. It is a use tax too. They Are picking on you because You Can actually afford it, a local that is trying to be on time to work will take food out of his kids mouth to pay a fine. Shakedowns are one of the oldest traditions in the history of man kind. Some of you may have even read that Jesus was in trouble with the Jewish Priest for having relationships with Tax Collectors (the police). A non-corrupt police force is still an experiment of a rather young age. Pay the fucking fine and slow down.
ticket 1500 cords
both times we were stopped we were asked for 1500 cords or 100 US$....they took out some law book and showed us the amount with the infraction (speeding) alongside. We were driving a beat up Yaris, so it's not like they thought we were super rich in some fancy SUV...go figure. Could it be because my (israeli) husband looks really nicaraguan?
Mordida
I've only paid a mordida once. I paid 20 cordobas. I've seen people pay from 20 to 50 cords. The good news is that I was only asked for a bribe once in 4 years.
I talk my way out of every infraction. Once I was pregnant so that worked. Next time my US friend was visiting and her child was asleep in the back of the car, but looked like he was sick so I said he was, and that worked. Another time I was talking on the phone and pleaded ignorance to the law, that worked. Recently I was stopped on my birthday and ended up crying (for various reasons) and being pissed off at the same time. I think I freaked them out...but it worked.
The one time they took away my license was when I didn't stop when asked to pull over. I deserved that one. I think the fine was something like 500 cords and it took a little longer than a month to get the license back.
The main thing is to be respectful of the officers. I'm a gringa and my Spanish is okay.
Remember, the officers aren't stupid. They know what a US license looks like because they see a lot of them. It's the foreign ones, like the Dutch, that'll catch 'em off guard.
A damn fee....
I even think is getting worse due to the economic situation, the price of gasoline, making everything go way more expensive for the popualtion to afford.
A police officer is never alone, there's always to guys working on the road so I think that a fair fee should be 150 cordobas, yes I said "fee" what else can it be call? a bribe? then you are BRIBER.... you don't want to be called like that, I think?
Is it any suprise
if the police needs to make a little extra? The average cop in Nicaragua earns about 1600 Cord. per month.
I really don't care if I make them a present of 100 Cord. once a while. When I screw up, I pay. Saves me time and money. If they try to charge me with something I did not do I fight it.
License
Get your license photocopied and then sealed in plastic and it will fool the majority of the police out there, and I like the State ID idea as well.
not recommended
Not that I am condoning it, but the last time I got stopped for some bullshit reason I just argued with them. Said they were picking on us as gringos and not on other Nicarguans that were doing the exact same thing we were doing, and also that I was not a tourist but that I lived in Matagalpa. Probably because there was a chinita speaking Spanish at the wheel, a white man who didn't speak spanish riding shotgun, and a crazy argumentative gringa yelling at them in the back, they probably just thought, well you don't see this everyday....
Time or Money
I have been told the "standard bribe" is C$100. I have never paid anything. My "yes, I did something wrong and I understand you are going to take my license" with no indication that I understand the idea of a bribe seems to always get me a "ok, don't do it again" warning.
cops
Amanda...what we do is just get a few florida I.D. cards and just give them to the cops they have always accepeted them as a drivers lic. And I also have never given them more than $5 U.S. But if they keep your i.d. who cares, you still have your fl. drivers lic.
Speeding Tickets
It does sound pretty cynical but you can get out of a speeding ticket for a 100 cords.
Speeding Tickets
Pretty sad commentary on the state of poice affairs. Particularly since the police are operating under the administration of the anticorruption reformer Aminta Granera. From a practical matter when you do not succumb to the siren song of the traffic officer and take the ticket, they lose your license in the transito office and it takes up to a month to get it back after you pay the fine. It is also interesting that there is no effort to rehabilitate drivers for commiting traffic offenses as you see in other jurisdictions, community service or traffic school is just not an option. It all translates to money. I can not remember what I was told about DUI infractions but it is a light sanction.
Thanks
Thanks for the suggestions/advice...we saw a lot more police pulling people over than I remember from 4 years ago...Haim think's it's telling of the economic situation there...which is way rougher than I remember from before
License
sleep is for the weak.
Does anyone know how much it would be to get a licence? I look older than my 13 years, my father was german so I am tall.
