Domes?

Just realized I should mention this. Both Doug and I are going to be building Ecoshell I domes. (See http://www.monolithic.com for details.) In my case, they will be used for the cabinas and some utility buildings at the Geek Ranch.

While not pre-fab, we expect them to be easy and relatively inexpensive to build. We should know a lot more in the next 2-3 months.

Thanks,

fyl, please keep us posted.

Tia Juana

My tia Juana lives in one (that has since been expanded). There are quite a few in Estelí apparently being built by an NGO. If I ever know about one before it goes up, I will document the process.

Basically, it works like this:

  1. A cement slab is poured with long metal strips (probably 2.5 meters) in it. These strips have slots for wall panels.
  2. The wall panels are slid into the strips.
  3. The roof supports are connected to the strips and the roof put on.
  4. If electric wiring is to be added, it is just surface mounted. I don't know of any built with plumbing.

The whole job is less than a week. The wall panels are pre-cast concrete maybe 1 meter wide. The typical house is built on a rectangular slab but the house has one corner "cut out" to offer a covered porch.

I am actually interested to see how fast we can build the domes planned for the Geek Ranch. As we are actually building everything from scratch, it certainly will take longer than a pre-fab but I still think they can be made in a week of elapsed time.

Prefab homes in Nicaragua

Fyl/Beachin, do you know the name of the manufacturer of the house you are describing? I believe it is Mayco, that is located near the refinery in Managua. I hear that they deliver and build on site concrete pre-fab buildings and houses. Three years ago, I ask a friend and told me that at that time they were costing from US$4K to US$8K. I also read a few years ago an article in the Nuevo Diario entreprenuers section, about a company that manufactures prefab pinewood cabins in Managua. If anyone know or have more information on the manufacturers of both types, please post it. It will be helpful to the person that is asking the question

Thanks,

this pre fab product

is not from mayco. concrete total is the name of the company that is makeing this prefab home.

Pre-Fab

It's all part of the adventure!

I've been searching for info on these houses for about one year. I would really appreciate a copy of the photos and any info about where you can get designs for these homes. There's no web site that I can find but is there an E-Mail address? I'll take any help I can get. Once again, I'd love to see the photo's!

Thanks
