Rolling blackouts

In our neighborhood in León we were 6 hours without electricity yesterday, today 4, but it’s during the day, so it’s not a hardship so far, and at a time when the businesses downtown need it.

Nicaragua is experiencing a shortfall of 50-60 MW in its ability to generate electricity. The Esso refinery in Puerto Corinto is having ‘technical problems’ (The general manager is quoted as saying, “They’re halfway overcome.” Feel better?) Plus the transportation strike is keeping fuel oil tank trucks from reaching the diesel generator sites. Plus other plants are not generating at full capacity for maintenance repairs. Sugar refineries that generate electricity from cane waste, though still producing, don’t generate 60 MW, even in mid-harvest.

75% of the energy that Nicaragua consumes, 510 MW daily, is derived from petroleum powered generators.

Here's the link

to Union Fenosa's schedule of blackouts: http://www.disnorte-dissur.com.ni/Sa...sa.aspx?id=195

Are there published . . .

Are there published . . . schedules for the temporary rolling blackout yet? I can't find anything in the press.

I'm not sure they are really rolling blackouts

SJDS had outages everyday, but they are getting shorter and shorter. Today only 1.75hrs. I think here it is because of the crews moving posts for the road construction.

Any conspiracy theories?

The refinery has existed "forever". A good conspiracy theory is that something in the refinery noticed the crude said "directly from Venezuela" instead of "from our parent company" on it and that created a "technical problem". No idea if this is the case but it does seem somewhat strange.

The transport strike, on the other hand, is a clear reality. I regularly read the MRS press blurbs. They have had an assortment of critical statements of the current government. Generally, you see something from Jarquin when he actually has something useful to say. (You can actually go back to the 2006 presidential campaign where everyone else was busy back-stabbing but the MRS seemed to just keep saying it the way they saw it.)

Well, so far, nothing from the MRS on the transport strike issues. No matter where you fit in the political spectrum, there is no easy solution to the rising fuel price issues.

ezgringa I have no

ezgringa I have no compassion for them the companias and the government after I have now 3 toes bandaged and recovering from a blackout during the night here. And to me here we go SR. Ortega. I will just quote a verse from an American song..."What have you done for me lately?"

What song is that?

Sorry to hear about your toes. Really.

I believe that would be...
