Import Duty on Household GoodsSubmitted by ATZ on 14 April, 2008 - 10:12.
Assuming no pensionado status, any idea on the duty when importing various household goods. Say the load is valued at 10K? Is it a fixed percent. I realize the assessed value may be higher than what mine is so let's just say that is what they say it is worth. Any info appreciated. atz ( categories: )

It depends on
if you are moving into the country and the stuff is of your own personal use; you are allowed up to $150,000 worth of personal items including vehicles, without import duty fees.
If you are bringing it for non-personal use, it will be assessed a value and will be charged 25% of such value. I strongly suggest you gather as many receipts or bills of sale as possible to contest their assessed value if it turns out to be higher that yours, they do listen to reason if you bring proof. Do not bring toys, they have a ban on toys into Nicaragua and they do not let them in-I don't know why, they just do!
35% of the assessed value for cars that are non-commercial vehicles such as anything that does not have a bed or can not be loaded for tranporting goods.
Your personal vehicles (up to 2) may be up to 10 years old if it's "closed", such as cars or suvs, they won't let you bring cars older than that. Any age if it is a pick up truck.
most of what you
mentioned is true however....
Those Exemptions only apply to Nicaraguans that are moving back to Nicaragua after being away for more than 3 years, this is known as Menaje. Furthermore... the 10 year old rule Does Not Apply to cars/vehicules that are introduced into the country by Nicaraguans who have been away for more than 2 years. Info Here: http://www.dga.gob.ni/preguntadetalle.cfm?recordID=75 Pensionados also have a similar exemption. On the vehicule it's an Exemption of UP $25,000,should the vehicule be worth more that that then you are assessed the difference, and it's 1 vehicule per family not 2. The DGA website is somewhere in here I've posted it more than once, maybe phil can help :-).
