Drunk Killed in Auto Accident

0

This morning a drunk was killed when run over by the rear wheels of an 18 wheeler in Estelí. The accident was a bit non-traditional at least by U.S. standards.

The truck was parked in front of Shell Esquipulas (that's two blocks from Billy Bob's house). As this location is known for the location to "rent" women, trucks being parked there are fairly common not that we know what this truck driver was doing.

In any case, he went to his truck early in the morning, started it and pulled out. Clearly something was wrong so he went back to check it out and found a person that had been flattened across the ribs by the rear wheels. Whether or not the person was drunk we don't know but the person was one of Estelí's known drunks. He was apparently sleeping under the truck.

And that's the exciting news for the morning from Estelí.

i will pray

for that poor soul.

was the truck driver taken into custody?

when government grows, liberty yields, thomas jefferson

I doubt it

I don't know for sure but it seems unlikely any charges would have been filed. Everyone knows who the drunks are here and they can be found sleeping on the streets (one of the advantages of good weather year round). So, while this sounds odd by U.S. standards, this type of thing is just going to happen.

moving targets

Sleeping under trucks is dangerous, just like winos getting killed in the US by sleeping in dumpsters that get fed into automated trash trucks.

A while ago a woman was killed in a crosswalk by a taxi. I.m not sure if there is any connection, but a few months later 2 of the crosswalks on the Panam were repainted, althought the other six or so are almost invisible. Lately during the noon rush hour, Tansito has had police at 3 or 4 crosswalks to insure that the pedestrians have a fair shot at crossing the road.

When I first saw Esteli 3 years ago I saw nothing that even looked like a traffic jam. Now the Panam has 3 a day and Central ave going to the park has at least an afternoon rushhour. The car is taking over and quality of life is going down.

Allergy sufferers beware: allergies, conjuntivis, asthma, etc. are very common here during the dry season. The Municipio makes no effort to clean the Panam, and sensitve persons who live, work , or travel within 3 or 4 blocks of the Panam are likely to have problems.

¨pata de perro¨

That's unfortunate,

That's unfortunate,

Hopefully the Nicaraguan government does something and fixes the road or builds a bypass one. I was thinking that it would be intersting if a boulevard was built parallel to the river but I don't know if it's feasable.

Pan Am is the bypass

The old Pan Am ran through the middle of town. What happened is that when the bypass was built it became something to build around. This made a lot of sense for the agricultural supply businesses and gas stations but, unfortunately, the Pan Am is now surrounded by businesses and barrios.

If you compare this to what happened when the U.S. government built route 66, you see the parallel. Your city is either on the new highway or your city becomes a ghost town. In Nicaragua, the new highways have been built close enough that the town migrates instead.

Boulevard

I was just reading the Urban development plan 2005-2015 from the alcaldia website and it said that they are sticking with the plan (done in 1995) to build the pana-american route towards the east of town and convert the existing pan-american into a boulevard for the city (that's probably why there are already sidewalks and lights, what else? Have they started planting trees and grass?
