Ordering On-Line w/Credit Card Payment

In the past few months, when I tried to buy something on-line, and pay with a credit card, I got an obscure "declined" message. Usually, a different card would work. Well, today, I finally got a useful error message that seems to indicate a real problem.

First, I have a shipping address in Houston and a credit card whose billing address matches. This has been my usual way of doing business on-line. Well, today, I got this nice "declined: IP country mismatch" message. This, of course, is true as my IP address indicates I am in Nicaragua, not Texas.

I switched to a card that usually works under this condition. One that matches my Nicaragua address (which generally precludes address verification). Same problem. Now, the web site wouldn't let me change my billing address to anywhere except the US or Canada so I couldn't offer an address that matched my IP address.

Now, it seems pretty dumb to have to hire a person with a U.S. IP address to place orders for me. Credit card companies are ok with listing multiple shipping addresses but this problem is with the web site, not the credit card company. Short of finding a different vendor, I don't see a good way out and my fear with that approach is that this type of "fraud checking" will become more popular.

credit cards

fyi, the problem was actually with the bank who issued the credit card-they're the ones who authorize transactions. I work at a major bank doing fraud checking. We lose 25 million a week due to fraud. We advise customers if they are traveling to let us know they will be using the card. Your card has a "hold" on it and that's why you can't change addresses. The company should have a collect number and once you call and are verified there shouldn't be any problem. I understand your frustration-it's one of the calls I hate the most.

Credit card security

well certainly someone is messing around with my credit card details. few months back i just bought camera online and provided with my credit card details.first of all there was a delay in dispatch and then monthly 2 dollars they are charging i dont know against what. =================== Sandra

I think you should have

I think you should have asked for more informations from your credit card company, they can send you such informations. You can always try to apply for a credit card there, I am sure there are plenty of offers. I am actually thinking to get a credit card from www.ApplyOnline.CitiCards.com, they seem to best fit my needs. Now that I read about these issues I think I am gonna ask them to give me more informations so I can know exactly what my options are for different circumstances.

A new solution has arrived (maybe)

I've run into this IP mismatch problem for years since I've always lived outside of the U.S., but everything gets shipped through my freight forwarder in Nevada. I've had to get used to not being able to do business with some companies.

Well now Paypal has a new service called a virtual secure card or something like that. Essentially, it generates a virtual card number just for that purchase. There's even a toolbar plugin for Internet Explorer (still waiting for Firefox plugin). So far, I've been able to use that service where my CCs did not work. I don't know why since it doesn't change my IP, but there's something you can try.

Also, have you tried a VPN through a PC in the States?

The next absurdity

Ok, update on this game. Today I went to order something (again, from the U.S.) from a company that will ship to Nicaragua. Made sense.

Well, after various iterations, no go. I have my choice of error messages:

  • Your IP does not match billing address IP.
  • We don't accept credit cards from that country (Nicaragua).

IP proxy

I have been doing this for years. Do a search for an "IP Proxy" or "proxy server", there are many. Then go to the site and look for a high anonymity or anonymous IP adress, others are listed as transparent, they will not work. These sites list IP all around the world so look for a US IP address.

Then go to tools, internent options, connections tab, and at the bottom, LAN settings. Check the box that says "use a proxy server..." and add the IP and port. For what ever reason I only like to use port 80 or 8080 but others should work.

You need to test it because some are very slow and when you make a credit card purchase it most likely will not go through because it is so slow. When you are done uncheck the proxy server box since these IP's do not last for a long time.
