Seed Exchange

Does anyone want to exchange seeds. I don't have anything to offer yet but, I expect to in the future. I'm looking for Neem. I'm also looking for someplace to purchase native fruit trees and plants - coffee (as a ornamental - I realize in the low altitude Granada area the beans would suck), zapote, papaya, cacao, pitaya. Catarina, so far as I have been able to find, is only in the ornamentals business. I'm not really that mobile either, so I'll need to arrange delivery.

nutmeg

My sister-in-law (who lives in Nicaragua) is looking to grow nutmeg. I'm wondering if anybody has a source for that? From searching on the Internet, looks like a lot is grown in Grenada, but that's not exactly a bus ride away.

Pitahaya

grow from cuttings, as most succulents. Ask around and see if a neighbor has a plant. Cut a piece 6¨or more long with a sharp knife or pruners, its tougher than it looks. Let cutting heal in shade for a week , then plant in planter mix of 2/3 coarse sand and 1/3 compost (abono organico) or just tie to a good spot on a tree or fence. These are epiphytes, ie they grow on trees, roofs, rocks etc. and don´t normally grow in soil. One cutting I tied to a tree during the rainy season sprouted roots and new ¨leaves¨¨ and made good growth. Its pretty much dormant now during the dry. Plants in planters are growing. I also grew some from seed just for fun, its the slow way to do things, cuttings are the normal mode.

¨pata de perro¨

Good tip

I've also found a source in Nicaragua for Neem seeds and cuttings and our home grown compost is well on it's way to being bag ready.

Neem seeds

Can you share your source for neem in Nicaragua? Interested in seeds, sproutings or seedlings. I have a source in Florida but prefer to purchase in Nicaragua. Thanks.

Sure

As soon as I have either in hand I'll let you know. I expect to be able to do this in the next week or so.
