by Michael Asher,

World Temperatures according to the Hadley Center for Climate Prediction. Note the steep drop over the last year.A twelve-month long drop in world temperatures erases global warming

Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile -- the list goes on and on. No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.

Meteorologist Anthony Watts compiled the results of all the sources. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to erase nearly all the global warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year time. For all sources, it's the single fastest temperature change every recorded, either up or down.

Scientists quoted in a past DailyTech article link the cooling to reduced solar activity which they claim is a much larger driver of climate change than man-made greenhouse gases. The dramatic cooling seen in just 12 months time seems to bear that out. While the data doesn't itself disprove that carbon dioxide is acting to warm the planet, it does demonstrate clearly that more powerful factors are now cooling it.

Let's hope those factors stop fast. Cold is more damaging than heat. The mean temperature of the planet is about 54 degrees. Humans -- and most of the crops and animals we depend on -- prefer a temperature closer to 70.

Historically, the warm periods such as the Medieval Climate Optimum were beneficial for civilization. Corresponding cooling events such as the Little Ice Age, though, were uniformly bad news.

science seems to say, "hoax"

MIT scientists baffled by global warming theory, contradicts scientific data Trendwatch By Rick C. Hodgin Thursday, October 30, 2008 09:55 12 votesBuzz up! Boston (MA) - Scientists at MIT have recorded a nearly simultaneous world-wide increase in methane levels. This is the first increase in ten years, and what baffles science is that this data contradicts theories stating man is the primary source of increase for this greenhouse gas. It takes about one full year for gases generated in the highly industrial northern hemisphere to cycle through and reach the southern hemisphere. However, since all worldwide levels rose simultaneously throughout the same year, it is now believed this may be part of a natural cycle in mother nature - and not the direct result of man's contributions.

Un experto de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México pronosticó que en alrededor de diez años la Tierra entrará a una “pequeña era de hielo” que durará de 60 a 80 años y será causada por la disminución de la actividad solar. An expert from the National Autonomous University of Mexico predicted that in about ten years the Earth will enter a "little ice age" which will last from 60 to 80 years and may be caused by the decrease in solar activity.

Víctor Manuel Velasco Herrera, investigador del Instituto de Geofísica de la UNAM, sostuvo lo anterior durante una conferencia que impartó en el Centro de Ciencias Aplicadas y Desarrollo Tecnológico. Victor Manuel Velasco Herrera, a researcher at the Institute of Geophysics of the UNAM, as argued earlier during a conference that teaches at the Centre for Applied Sciences and Technological Development.

En el acto, el especialista en sistemas de percepción remota dijo que la reciente rotura del glaciar argentino Perito Moreno, inusual por haberse producido en pleno invierno austral, no se debió al calentamiento global. In the event, the specialist in remote sensing systems said that the recent rupture of the Argentine Perito Moreno glacier, unusual for having produced a full austral winter, was not due to global warming.

El evento se debió, dijo, a un proceso natural provocado por la temperatura y la precipitación del río. The event was due, he said, a natural process caused by temperature and precipitation of the river.

Velasco Herrera calificó de erróneos los pronósticos del Panel Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático (IPCC), conforme a los cuales el planeta está experimentando un aumento gradual de la temperatura, el llamado calentamiento global. Velasco Herrera described as erroneous predictions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), pursuant to which the planet is experiencing a gradual increase in temperature, the so-called global warming.

The models and forecasts of the IPCC "is incorrect because only are based on mathematical models and presented results at scenarios that do not include, for example, solar activity," said the specialist also in image processing and signs and prevention of natural disasters.

Just curious....

Can anyone tell me how this pertinent to living in Nicaragua besides the fact that it is very hot here?

actually...

this was one of my considerations in my choice to move to Nicaragua. After researching climate change data for a few years, I realized the global warming theory fell flat and Central America was going to be a better geographical choice for me than the Pacific Northwest.

Also it was the first time in recorded history it snowed in Somalia. The weather is getting funky and I think the equatorial regions are going to fair better than higher latitudes .

global warming on jupiter!

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap080523.html

Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.

2008 May 23

Jupiter's Three Red Spots Credit NASA, ESA, M. Wong, I. de Pater (UC Berkeley), et al. Explanation: For about 300 years Jupiter's banded atmosphere has shown a remarkable feature to telescopic viewers, a large swirling storm system known as The Great Red Spot. In 2006, another red storm system appeared, actually seen to form as smaller whitish oval-shaped storms merged and then developed the curious reddish hue. Now, Jupiter has a third red spot, again produced from a smaller whitish storm. All three are seen in this image made from data recorded on May 9 and 10 with the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2. The spots extend above the surrounding clouds and their red color may be due to deeper material dredged up by the storms and exposed to ultraviolet light, but the exact chemical process is still unknown. For scale, the Great Red Spot has almost twice the diameter of planet Earth, making both new spots less than one Earth-diameter across. The newest red spot is on the far left (west), along the same band of clouds as the Great Red Spot and is drifting toward it. If the motion continues, the new spot will encounter the much larger storm system in August. Jupiter's recent outbreak of red spots is likely related to large scale climate change as the gas giant planet is getting warmer near the equator.

bad name

Joe Bastardi, with Accuweather, usually tells it like it is. Many remember him from the Katrina coverage. Forget Al Gore's science fiction - he's making money off of us in multiple ways. Real atmospheric scientists are behind Joe 10 to 1, and they could lose their jobs like the one in Oregon did! There are 5 times more polar bears than 1960 ( maybe more - when I read the research papers, I've actually found apologies for finding too many), CO2 is actually a fertilizer (ask pot farmers) that gives us higher (no pun) yields, and most of the subsidized energy source pollute more than they help. Joe calls on the President to get real scientists to look into it, not political hacks ( the head of NASA has been caught fudging numbers in favor of Gore's beliefs, and is suspect ). Here's Joe's Opinions: Monday, May 19, 2008 An Open Letter to the Presidential Candidates AccuWeather.com's senior meteorologist and long range expert Joe Bastardi sent the global warming center a copy of his open letter to the 2008 presidential candidates. I like his idea in the fourth paragraph. Here it is...............

Dear _______

The nonsense that is the global warming debate can be likened to a Don King production, where the two main antagonists, well deserved ones at that, are still hours away from the main fight. Instead, we have under-cards that leave us simply wondering if we will ever get to the real deal.

I use the fight game because in boxing in past days, guys went right at it. Jake La Motta and Sugar Ray Robinson once fought each other within a few weeks of a fight. There was no dancing and ducking and big mouthing, just the fight against the guys that deserved to be in the ring.

This is exactly how this should be handled. Mr. Obama, can the Al Gore as an advisor on the environment. Mr. McCain, quit succumbing to pressure because you want to look nice or moderate. Both of you, get the people that can give this debate its true merit in front of you. Hillary, if you are elected, the same thing (you got to admit, she is showing some Lady Thatcher or Golda Meir spunk these days). But stop with watching people that aren't the main event.

Within the first 100 days of office, get the top five SCIENTISTS on both sides of the issue in front of you in the oval office and let them argue it out. No cameras, no press, just you, your closest advisors, and the people that are qualified to do this. Have trusted members of both sides of the aisles, but get the politics out of it.

The polar bear situation should push Americans over the edge. The long term population has increased. In addition, the cold this winter may simply be a preview of what is coming. That we are basically going to make it illegal to get oil, from an area that can perhaps help us get off foreign oil, because of yet another problem that may not exist, should be enough to clear the air and reveal that there are a lot of people supporting this position that are not driven by the science, but what may be an almost fanatical madness, and that should resonate with people. Sir or Mam, if you are absolutely convinced, after seeing people who don't think polar bears are as important as the people you are elected to serve, that argue out the science, then commit the American people on a path that will basically spend their hard-earned money on a problem our chief rivals are probably simply paying lip service too, then I will support you. But if you have doubt, after clearing away the feelings and looking at the facts, then by proceeding you will put yourself in a rush to judgment before the facts are clear that has left many Americans disillusioned about our nation in other matters.

This is not a matter of politics, it is not a matter of feelings. It is a matter of science and facts and educated men squaring off and displaying their knowledge. A non-conclusive answer in this matter is no answer at all, and no mandate to perhaps send us on path that could affect the chance for the very people we should have the most compassion for, to improve their lot.

Yours very truly,

Joe Bastardi

This article

newsbusters.org,

"Scientists used to believe the oldest trees on the planet were in North America with ages in the 5,000-year range. Hooey, for a new discovery in Sweden has completely debunked this consensus, resulting in a total rewrite of climate history while bringing into serious question global warming theories espoused by Nobel Laureate Al Gore and his sycophant devotees. Think green media members will be falling over themselves to report this new finding? While you ponder, consider the evidence supplied by the British Telegraph Thursday (emphasis added):The world's oldest tree has been found in Sweden, a tenacious spruce that first took root just after the end of the last ice age, more than 9,500 years ago.

The tree has rewritten the history of the climate in the region, revealing that it was much warmer at that time and the ice had disappeared earlier than thought. [...] It had been thought that this region was still in the grip of the ice age but the tree shows it was much warmer, even than today, [Prof Leif Kullman at Umeå University] says. “Spruces are the species that can best give us insight about climate change,” he says. The summers 9,500 years ago were warmer than today, though there has been a rapid recent rise as a result of climate change that means modern climate is rapidly catching up. Hmmm. So, as a result of this find, we now know that summers in Sweden were not only much warmer 9,500 years ago than the consensus view used to be, but ALSO warmer than today...even after all that awful carbon dioxide that man has released into the atmosphere in the past couple of centuries. Yes, I'm sure media will be all over this story in the coming days...not! *****Update: As a post facto aside, this find should also point out how irrelevant a "consensus" is as it pertains to science, for new discoveries are always debunking and challenging conventional wisdom. Sadly, folks in the media, and climate alarmists looking to stifle debate, refuse to understand this inconvenient truth. That said, energy and financial policies SHOULD NOT be based on supposedly consensus views of science for EXACTLY this reason, for a lot of time, money, and resources could be devoted to a "solution" to a "problem" which ends up NOT existing. —Noel Sheppard is an economist, business owner, and Associate Editor of NewsBusters."

I often am hypnotised in to a thinking that the car sales person is my friend, and then it dawns on me....he works for the dealership, he has the dealerships best interest in mind. I always read articles and immediately turn to see who there biggest advertisers are, follow the money. Big oil certainly doesnt want you to believe we have problem. Much like our friend from Toronto I too have some pretty vivid memories of the past 40 years of weather, not in Canada but in Florida. Throughout my childhood and into my adult life we had one bad Hurricane in our area, one, Hurricane David 1980 and now we are having as many as 1-5 in one year in that same area! I can not remember a tornado growing up and we just had 3 major, major ones in the Daytona area in the last 5 years. Now if I were a home builder I might say dont worry about it its always like this..rebuild/buy more oil/become more gluttonous. i don't

think that he was citing Hadley for their premise of the "myths." i thought he was citing the temperatures, "the facts," so to speak, "No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. my point being, if the source for global warming is plant food, CO2, then i'd expect the temperatures to continue to go up, kinda like they did from 1000 ad to 1400 ad. alas, i am not a scientist. the high priest of global warming still has some convincing to do for me. check out my bio, i am into wind, solar, radiant barriers, cisterns. but not bc of "global warming or global cooling."

Solar flare activity..

would be a better indicator of global cooling trends,; " the last three times we had such a weak solar cycle, the Earth cooled (the Dalton minimum centered around 1790-1810, the Maunder Minimum from around 1645 to 1710, the Sporer Minimum centered around 1420 to 1570). "

Why is it that we have so little tolerance for others opinions and viewpoints?

Che feels passionate about the global warming issue. SO WHAT?

Questioning his integrity and honesty is in my opinion not appropriate.

I happened to know that Che is a person dedicated to his profession. I know other people in his field that work incredibly long but irregular hours mostly at home but in many cases at various locations all over the county. They are “On Duty” 24/7 and it sure is not the kind of work I’d want to do.

Government employees wasting tax dollars?

Good question...Should taxpayers foot the bill for government employees to surf the Internet or visit non-work related forums or chat rooms? How do you feel about it? Do you think it is fair to the tax payer? Is there a remedy? Should it be reported? Let's hear you thoughts on this topic...

Absolutely it is not fair.

Absolutely it is not fair. It should be reported and punished. The transgression should result dismissal and the person made to repay the wages paid to that person during the time spent online plus the time it takes to investigate the said transgression and time it takes administer the penalty. Because IMO it amounts to stealing in an abstract sense perhaps but still stealing. Many places especially in the government, computer and communication places of employment now monitor online activity in order to prevent said abuses.

Internet abuse vs. Global warming

As for will305's question: " Should taxpayers foot the bill for government employees to surf the Internet",

This would make a great individual thread if we could find out that this is an issue in Nicaragua. It certainly was an issue in my offices for a while and some of my now ex employees wish they had never heard of the internet.

Let's stay on subject and not lose sight of the original post about global warming.

This is an issue everywhere...

regardless of whether an employee is working 24/7. If they are paid to work 24/7 and accept that responsibility, then be working. What we are saying is that because you may receive a 10 minute work related phone call at 1 am, for example, that means you can surf the net for 3 hours the next day in your office? Doubtful...accordingly, I don't believe any employer would bless sufing the internet for non-work related issues, it is generally prohibited in all workplaces.

In regards to staying on subject, I also think this post completely irrelevant to Nicaragua. Sure, Nicaragua has weather issues, like anywhere, but then again, I could make anything equally as obscure relevant to Nicaragua, but is that really what the intended readership wants to read, i.e; "Make information on Nicaragua available, particularly to English-speaking people who have or will move there. Content is a cooperative effort from this same community"?

please

please see above. i was a prosecutor for 10 years. now i am an exempt employee, always on duty. 2 nights ago, i was awakened to do my job at 1:30 am bc i still work with law enforcement. you ought to have the facts first before you shoot.
