Peat Moss Source?

Submitted by fyl on 6 February, 2008 - 18:05.

Does anyone know of a source of peat moss in Nicaragua. No, it is not to make Scotch. I am looking at a particular composting toilet and it needs to be fed peat moss.

While we are on this basic subject, anyone know of sources of perlite and/or vermiculite?

You might do a Google search

You might do a Google search for coconut husk fiber, it is being touted as a peat moss alternative, not sure if it will work for your application, but there is plenty of info on it & it is abundant here in Nicaragua.

you can probably use sawdust

you can probably use sawdust in your toilet instead of peat moss. be careful handling vermiculite, the dust is very toxic to your lungs. farm and garden supply stores is where to get it.

Peat Alternatives

The main function of the peat mixture is 1. Maintain the carbon/nitrogen balance 2. Absorb Liquid 3. Help oxygen penetrate for aerobic composting ? maybe also something to do with ph ?

I'd check with the manufacturer, but I think that sawdust & wood shavings, dried hemp/flax, ground corn stover, dry dirt free regular moss/tree moss etc. would work as well.

With a couple hundred acres I'm sure you can make your own mix.

Doug is the compost guru, if you want tech details. He has lots of info on methane digesters if you haven't thought about that.

I'll ask around for a source of peatmoss.

Compost Guru....

the path to enlightenment starts at the pile.

How's that for Guru speak ?

In Jenkins book "Humanure" he recommends "rotted sawdust, peat moss, leaf mould, rice hulls or grass clippings", a summary of the book is online;

personally I like the digester system, gives you methane to burn, Al Rutan was the real guru,an article on page 6;

gives some insight into his work.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate

Interesting mix, my wife and

Interesting mix, my wife and I are always composting anything we can thats good for our vegetables we prefer planting vegetables over flowers since we can actually eat them when ready. We have plenty of worms in the pile that helps break down the food and makes it nutrient rich, she's actually loves gardening and can't stand the winter since she wants to be outdoors. So since mothers day is around the corner i got her a whole new set of tools to work in the garden with im sure she'll be happy with them.

Vermiculite?

Would this be raw flakes, formed material, or something else?
